Makes me embarssed to admit Highland Park was my original home town. Used to be a nice little Swedish community back when my grandparents came over from the "old country". Times have changed.

"A number of Illinois cities are racing to enact their own individual gun control measures to get in under the wire before a state-wide law with preemption is either signed into law or enacted after a legislative veto override. The prosperous north shore town of Highland Park managed to get in on the grandfathering last night with what suntimes.com reports was a 6-1 vote for an "assault weapons" ban. And it's about as bad as you'd expect . . .

You can read the new ordinance, including the list of prohibited weapons here, but most of the fun is to be found in the law's New York-style treatment of scary black rifles and "high capacity" magazines.

If you're a Highland Parker and own one of the prohibited firearms, you now have ninety days to decide whether to 1) get your gun the hell out of the city, 2) make it inoperable or modify it so that it doesn't have one of the law's long list of offending features, or 3) surrender it to the Chief of Police who will cheerfully destroy it.

If you're caught with a gun on the no-no list when the law takes effect, it'll cost you between $500 and $1000 or six months in jail. Or both.

Is this lawsuit bait? You'd think so. But as anyone who'd followed the torturous process in the Land o' Lincoln can attest, that's a long and winding road. In the mean time, gun owners in Highland Park – as well as the other towns considering similar measures – have some decisions to make."

I've been getting alerts every day and sometimes multiple times a day from the IL State Rifle Assoc. of communities having hearings to establish AWB's in order to beat the enactment of the carry law that IL has gone without so long. Here in downstate IL counties are announcing measures that no one will be prosecuted for carrying concealed within those communities. The State Police state they will have to enforce the laws on the books. As usual in IL, it's a mess. Political climate is terrible, State Pension program is many "Billions" of dollars under water with no hope in sight. State so far behind processing and issuing state licenses (for anything) people are being arrested for expired licenses when the state cashed their checks months ago but haven't processed the renewal. We all wish we could give Chicago to Canada.

cut Chicago off from the rest of the state, let it float out into the lake and start it's own country. let them sink or swim on their own and not with everyone else's tax dollars.

What does this have to do with Chicago? I thought the thread was about Highland Park,Illinois?

I printed the entire ordinance just to see what exactly was done. It is disgusting. It is also stupid.

For example Page 1:

"...such weapons pose an undue threat to public safety..."

Page 2:

"(c) A semiautomatic pistol that has the capacity to eaccept a detachable magazine and has one or more of the following: (ii) A folding. telescoping or thumbhole stock;"

The last I heard, that constitutes a short-barreled rifle.

Pages 4 and 5:

The list of prohibited firearms are listed as make and model, just model, just make, and slang terms. Also, it is Fabrique Nationale.

Stupid and disgusting and a pile of manure.

and so it begins...or I should say continues....

chicago has the surrounding areas so poisoned with their anti gun conjecture and the "common" folk suck up every last drop of it.

it doesn't take much brain power to understand its ALL about control and NOTHING to do with public safety.

all you need to do it review Chicago's violent crime rate and the thousands of illegal weapons used EVERYDAY in the windy city.

I'm proud to say that I never vote for that party.

Im almost 100% the same way except that when I do see ones from the other side of the fence-that I personally know--they get my vote. Case in point was the Constable for Precinct 2-he got my vote as he's a Former Marine and a great LEO and person all round. Other than that-I normally choose where my vote goes when there is not more than one choice--so I write in Wayne and Heston at times :D
