Was planning to use my Shield for CC. Until I experienced 3 FTE's in about 60 rds fired. Back to carrying my PT709 Slim. Can't afford to have that problem in a bad situation. Any one else having this problem or am I just the un lucky one? :(

Guess you are unlucky. Never had that problem and have fired thousands of rounds through my 9mm Shield. What ammo did you use?

Over 500 rounds thru my Shield .40 and not a single issue besides front dot falling out but that was a quick fix. And very common the paint I used to fill it back in is also a little more vivid than the old dot.

Sorry to hear that and I must say that after 500+ rounds I haven't had a single issue with my Shield 40. Now I know everyone is going to ask you if you cleaned and lubed before hitting the range. Hopefully it's something minor like that cuz I haven't heard many FTE's lately. Good luck, I hope everything works out.

Cleaned and lubed before using. Used Remington 115 Gr JHP. Also Winchester target ammo 115 Gr FMJ. My Shield is a 9mm. It pulls the spent cart about half way out.

Nope....my 9mm Shield eats everything I put in it. Not one hiccup at all. The 1st time I shot it I ran 220 rounds and it wanted more.

Yes, I had same problem with my new 9 mm Shield and sent it back to SW.
They replaced the extractor. I have put another 250 rounds through it with just one FTE, which is still one too many.

Kayce21, ctkenc,

I'm looking to make a shield .40 purchase in the next few days but I have seen several recent posts about issues with newer builds, some even seemed confirmed by S&W around quality control.

I was looking at one today that was built 3/175 per the case and test fired 4 days ago, that was Monday of this week!

What are your build dates?

Look at the recent thread ' got my shield back today ' for a list of problems S&W anticipates with these guns.

They seem to be a work in progress!

This topic is funny, because I've never had a problem with either of my 2 Shields.

However, yesterday I did have a few FTE's with one of my Kimbers.

I guess my Kimber is a ***? Or perhaps maybe I just got a few bad rounds out of a box of ammo. =-)

What king of FTE? A stovepipe, or fail to extract from chamber? Any chance of anything contacting the slide or excess flip?

1000's of rounds through my Shield 40, and with a conversion 9mm barrel, with not one ejection issue.

Bob

I guess you would call it a "Stove Pipe". The spent round was part way out with an unspent round between it and the bolt.

I put about 250 rnds through my June 1 test date Shield 9 today and not a single hiccup. Serial HPJXXXX

Try a firmer grip and make sure the Shield is very well lubed for at least the first 500 rounds.

Might help, might not. Worth a try.

Added FWIW: After the first 100 rounds and two FTE's, my Shield has been perfect for 500 rounds+. I lube with Mobile 1 synthetic 5w-?. All of my firearms run well on Mobile 1 and a quart will last me for years.

Yep...I've had problems with my Shield: me and me. Mag release issue in the early stages = bad hand placement on my part...corrected with proper gripping. Slide release issue = bad thumb placement on my part...corrected thumb placement and now no more issues. I've had one stove pipe in 1500+ rounds through my Shield and that was when a buddy was shooting it for the first time and totally limp-wristed it. Other than that...my Shield chews em up and spits em out!

I agree on the ideas for correcting the issues especially grip and potential bad few rounds of ammo.

Lubed the gun with Mobil one. By the way I spoke to an old gun smith today and asked him what he used to lube his guns? He said if you really want to know I use synthetic motor oil. ( Mobil One) Just got back from the range. Put 108 rds through my new Shield. Had one stove pipe at round 61. No problem after that. Thats an improvement but looking for better performance. Cleaned and lubed and will run another 100 through it some time this week. Used 115 Grain Winchester 100 Round Value Pack ammo.

Shoot hotter ammo. Seems newer guns sometimes don't like the 115 grain lower-power value ammo.

I am glad to hear of the improvement.

Most pistols run right out of the box, and then some need the parts to wear in and smooth out. Each one is different.

Thanks for the report and I hope to read that your Shield is running perfect very soon.

I read that thread when it first was posted....being in the "industry" and reading in many different forums. I tend to think most of the responses from S&W were simply "we know where your going already" type responses....simply from dealing with the "it's gotta be the gun and not me" type of caller/poster.

My Shield was built on 4/15/2013....and it eats everything I put in it. No hiccups at all....yep it shoots low left. When I let another shooter shoot it that don't shoot as well as I do. By then they shoot their Glocks low left also. Shoot it correctly and it blows out the center.

Another 100 rounds

Just run another 100 through my Shield. No problems. I love this gun. I had a friend watch as the rounds ejected. He said he saw one casing make a weak ejection. He thought is was eather a weak load or a limp wrist. I can't help the weak load, but I can correct a weak wrist. All in all I am pleased with my Shield. Thanks for your coments. By the way, it doesn't shoot low left. Knocks out center all day long. :)
