2/5/2007 built MP 40 Is very rusty.

It's been put away for a few years and was properly cleaned and oiled when put away.

The slide is rusty as well as the mags?

I Damn near had a stroke thinking my other weapons I hadn't seen in a while would also be rusty, however noneof them are, not even the old G.I. 45?

What gives?

Yes it was.. with the factory "oil paper" wrapped around the slide just like it came from the factory.

Even with the factory oil paper the spongy material in that case attracts moisture, it's literally the last place you want to store your gun. If I'm not mistaken back in 2007 Smith had issues with some of their M&Ps with rust, perhaps your gun is part of that. I'd call Smith and see if they are willing to help you. We know it wasn't stored properly, but it may be defective as well.

I never store guns in gun socks, etc for long term storage for moisture reasons.

I use high quality desiccant in my gun safe and keep thehhouseat 76 year round, I'll call smith and Wesson in the morning.

All of the model 27's I've owned over the years never rusted and they weren't even stainless steel

For long term storage, all of my guns are in gun socks. They work.

I keep an open bag of charcoal in my gun room. It's a closet actually in my office in my basement. No rust on anything in 20 years. Change out the charcoal every year or so. The man I bought my house from built high end rifle stocks from exotic woods and told me to do this and you won't have to worry about rust.

They will warranty it. Mine (from the same time frame) rusted as well. Sent back to me with a new slide, two new mags and night sights.

Very interesting....what kind of charcoal? Plain old Kingsford?

This company's customer service is fantastic to say the least.

Though a few pistols come out seem to miss something that some feel good quality control could have caught they ALWAYS make it right.

I stored my M&P 9 in the plastic case it came in for the first month I had it. I was looking it over and noticed there was a small amount of rust in the rifling near the end of the barrel. It was pretty alarming considering it was brand new never fired. It cleaned it up pretty good with a bronze brush and some oil, but I've since been storing everything in silicone treated 'gun socks' and haven't had any issues. My favorite is the Bore Store brand, lots of padding to protect from scratches.
