I live in a 10 rd. Max state. :( so I've recently picked up a new mp45 because if I can only have 10, why not 10 bigger rounds. Not to mention every time I look for ammo 9mm is almost impossible to find and if I do, it's price has gone up to almost 45 prices. Any one own or carry one for similar reasons?

I recently purchased a couple of 45's too. A Glock 30S and a full size M&P (pretty amazing they both have 10rnd capacity). Wont have the M&P till next week and the Glock a week later.

Anyway before the shortage I was strictly 9mm but now my local range (where I am a member) I can always buy ammo at good prices but they have boxes/caliber limits. So it started making more sense to own more than one caliber. For example, today I was able to buy 3 boxes of 9mm ($11 per box) and 5 boxes of .45 ($20 per box). Limit on 9mm is 3 per day, 5 for 45.

I am a 9mm fan, but your move does make since since you are capacity limited.

I have considered getting a 45 too just so I can find ammo, this 9mm shortage is getting ridiculous.

My state has no capacity restrictions, but I traded my FS9 for a FS45. I like the accuracy of the 45acp from any gun I've fired it in. It has a 10+1rd. capacity with the flush mags, but that's why it stays slim, ergonomic and feels like the 9/40 as far as thickness in the grip. I also don't mind an extra .25 inch of barrel either. Mags for the FS45 are extremely easy to find and only $19.99 shipped from Botach.

As far as 45 goes, I'd have no problem loading it with 230gr. ball ammo for defense if that's all I had, but I'd never use FMJ in a 9mm for the same purpose. MY LGS just got a huge shipment of 9mm ammo in which I made sure to stock up on. That being said, I'm still happy I went with the FS45 instead.

I had a G30S and it was like holding an odd shaped brick. The XD/M series gets away with 13rds with a longer than normal grip. The M&P is not longer or thicker than it needs to be, so I'll take 10rds over an odd shaped 13rd. grip any day.

ETA: Looks like Botach is now out of stock on those mags. Thanks to all the jerks who bought them up so they could jack up the prices. I say this since when I called Botach to find out availability, they said they had tons of them (in the thousands) so only gougers would have bough them up to make a profit at this point. I'm telling you, S&W better release tens of thousands of mags all at once to counter act the nonsense from people continuing to hold on at making a profit in the gun community.

I do understand your logic, but when I do carry a .45 it's a 1911 LW Commander with 7+1 capacity. I often carry a M&P9c because it's smaller and lighter, easier to conceal. Or an LCR in the pocket when even a 9c is too obvious. The M&P .45 is just a bit too big and heavy for me.

Don't worry too much about 9mm. It'll be back.

Totally makes sense. Diversifying your ammo is a good thing. As long asnu don't mind the extra weight when carrying.

I ordered 2 45 mags from Botach last weekend (they showed in stock) and cancelled my order this morning when I was informed of the back order.

CDNN has M&P 45 used mags for $19.99.

No, I carry a .45 because bigger is better. I would carry a .45 even if I didn't live in a restricted state.

I have carried my M&P .45, but I prefer my 1911 because I shoot it better.

Sorry to be the only one to disagree. It's shot placement that mattrs most.
Being hit in a major blood vessel with a .380 or .32 will kill you much faster than a .45 in the shoulder.Remember 007 only carried a 380, lol.
I do like the .45 most myself, and I am going to look st a XDs, but so far a j frame and LCP hide away very easy.

Yep and your aim is going to be perfect with your major blood vessel seeking .380 and.32 ammo.Bigger is better.

Let's not get mean, I love .45 and said I plan on getting a XDs

It is all about shot placement, the FBI dropped the 10 mm campaign because the follow up shots were to timely because of the recoil, that follows the logic bigger is better.I am just trying to say bigger is not always better. Many many people have been killed by .22

On the other hand the armed forces still use the .45.

And to answer you next question, yes I would rather have a .45 than a .22in a gun fight. The point is use what you can control, or bigger is not better.

Same here, central MA. Bought an M&P 45c. If I can only have ten then why not the largest ten.

carried a 1911 since '69. still works for me. just don't trust a 9 mm. i know it's better with todays bullets , but the .45 bullets are better also.

I like carry handguns that do well in HP and FMJ. This is why my main carry is 45acp and pocket carry is .380. As a matter of fact, I'll be switching to FMJ in my BG380 once my Hornady Critical Defense runs out.

I'm sure people have been killed with BB guns like .22s, but the idea is to stop the encounter, not let someone continue trying to do harm to someone or myself until they bleed out. Shot placement is critical, but it's not everything.

I love the m&p 45 series. Gonna pick up a 45c when I get the extra funds in about a month and probably a Shield in 9. I picked one up for the first time a few days ago and its not as small as I had thought it would be.

What's the logic behind using FMJ in a self defense handgun? You need both penetration AND expansion to damage body tissue. Clean pass throughs won't do as much damage.

I don't know if you "need" expansion to damage body tissue, many dead bodies over the past century and some change without the use of JHPs to demonstrate that. JHP's are much more about being a responsible gun owner than the "extra tissue damage" you may gain from a JHP, if there is any (and surely will be) it's an added something to "stopping power."

FMJ's tend to exit the body with enough energy to do some serious damage and kill an innocent bystander beyond your intended target. JHP's tend to not have that kind of power, or at least a significantly reduced capacity for collateral damage in the event they do exit the body in mushroomed form.
