At work the other day in our break room I noticed one of the newjacks watching something called Amish Mafia. After about five minutes, I thought it was supposed to be a comedy routine but nope, this is supposed to be reality. What? Is this how far we have fallen now with our programming? I think I'll stick to my sci-fi shows because at least I know I am watching something fanciful and not meant to be taken seriously.

I get a kick out of all the custom car & bike "build" shows that for dramatic tension, always have to have a ride finished in a day, or the world will end. Apparently they've never heard of scheduling, yet somehow, they always manage to complete the project.

I have a lot of Mennonite friends and a few Amish acquaintances, so I know the image seen publicly about the Amish is just that, an 'image', and not always completely accurate. But the concept of this show is just ridiculous.

I've never watched it, but from the comments I've heard from those that have, no one on the show is actually 'Amish'. They may dress and act the part at times, but it's just an act.

The show is filmed about an hour away from me in Lancaster Pa.

Im sure that just like every other group of people the Amish have their fringe members but mafia? I doubt

The intro of "reality TV" was like a cancer for the future of TV. Cheap to make, popular with the "watch a train wreck crowd" that seems to spend allot of time in front of the tube. i.e It's very profitable. Worse yet was the point (somewhere) where it became fabricated reality akin to WWF wrestling. Sure they had to pay a script writer $13.75 /day but production costs were lowered still. Sadly, all of this makes it near impossable for high cost production series and documentaries to get off the ground.
All you can do is exercise your rights as a consumer and turn it off.

There's too much PC in entertaining. The writers make white people look stupid or evil. These so called reality shows make us look like a bunch of rednecks. The NRA gets this treatment also and there are folks determined to destroy this organization. Even the burglar alarm ads show the "evil white man" breaking in houses. I don't think anyone has an agenda against white folks. I just think we're an easy target because they're scared to show any other race of people in a bad light. I even called one of the burglar alarm companies and told them I would never buy their product until they fairly represented people of other races. Gotta go, a repeat of Duck Dynasty is coming on.

I had never met or known anyone that was Amish or Mennonite until about 3 years ago. We were building a new home and the framers were of those 2 religions. I was very favorably impressed by them. They worked hard the entire time, start to finish. I came home for lunch each day to watch the progress and it just so happened they took their lunch during that period. One of the younger guys was very personable and was more than willing to answer questions. They lived about 60 miles away and commuted in each day. The Amish guys rode, the Mennonites drove. I think that was a religious thing.

But the guys really had a work ethic. They kind of talked or communicated with each other, but didn't waste a lot of chatter. It was all business. Just as impressive was they didn't down a 6 pack at lunch like our local hillbillies would have.

One day I was thanking the talkative guy and said I did have a question. One of the studs was kind of split out. Suddenly the older guy jumped up and came over to see. He said they worked so fast that sometimes a poor board gets nailed up. He looked and agreed it was substandard. But then he said they'd take care of it. On my way home that night (well after they'd left, I worked longer hours!) I looked at the repair. He'd just scabbed in another board and then nailed it really well.

I came away with a feeling of confidence in their work. Last month we were at a flea market up in Dayton, OH and a lady dressed in some pretty old fashioned clothing was selling baked goods. The labels on the bread identified it as Amish. So we bought a loaf of cinnamon bread. Its the best I've ever tasted. Since my wife likes cinnamon, we've had quite a few samples over the last 43+ years. It would seem that all American workers haven't lost the faith or ability to do good work.

Yes the quality and makeup of these "reality shows" is almost beyond belief. It appears it is getting harder and harder for the producers of these shows to put in anything of substance to fill the spaces between commercials.

Even the Soprano' s was entertaining but not like the real Mafia by a long shot. I met the real mafia guys as a kid. They were like Sol, sussy, Chris or Pauly at all. These were very quiet stand up guys. They treated me like there own. The real mafia is no tv show I know.

The Sopranos had to end afterall they killed the show by killing all of them off. That doesn't happen in real life. Reality tv just goes too far for ratings.

I think Duck Dynasty is number one to me. These are down to earth people.

Now they do a spin off on duck dynasty with more southern people trying to find that second gold nugget in the gravel. They missed the boat on this one. It won't last too much longer.

The gold mining shows are ok but from the Yukon to south America with guys with ak 47' s who don't want us there anyway.

I do like watching Parker and Fred mining in the Yukon. The ghost miners is another good show too.

Other than these shows its the discovery channel, A&E and the history 1 & 2 channels. I watch the espnc fishing shows too.

The rest of tv is all about crime.

I guess all the 80s mob killings dont count?
Doesnt happen in real life? Ask how John Gotti become boss? By killing his boss. The guy lived but soon retired. Then the hitman was sent after some rivals who survived, found the hitman and killed him. That family even had 2 NYPD detectives on their payroll who killed for them as well

I knew some mob guys down in Boston. Nice guys......until you pissed them off. Then you disappeared. Have to be highly respectful around them. Or you would disappear. Can't insult religion around them or you disappear. Can't be funny around them unless your insulting their enemies .....or you disappear. So basically of you smile. Walk on eggshells.....share your lunch and stay on their good side......you disappear. Nice guys under those conditions though ,:)

The Amish are just as normal , or strange , as any other extreme socio-religious group. About 15yrs ago , some outlaw biker club out of Philly was busted making and distributing meth with a group of Amish on those Lancaster area farms.

About a year ago my wife and I were in chilis resturant here. A interesting type cowboy came in to meet his girlfriend and watch himself on one of those mountain men shows. It was a uncrowed slow afternoon and we all watched the episode together. It was about three guys playing mountain men crossing the mountains together between here and the tetons. He was the main one in the show knowing what he was doing. I asked him how he got on the show. He said, "They found me". I guess he is a guide/outfitter type and some producer types probley looked him up to make and sell the show. This guy seemed to be the real deal though. They used the old cap and ball rifles to shoot their food etc. I didnt press for the legalitys on all that part of course.
