You may recall that we have 3 cats that we adopted from a rescue shelter back in January. Lord knows I've posted enough pics of the little Furballs .
And you may have read my report about "our" lookin' after an outside cat that we have named Myah for reasons explained in that thread. I owe y'all an update on that anyway so I'll get to that a little later on in this thread.
Cody, our middle cat (11mo old) came down with what in a human would be referred to as a head cold. watery eyes, sneezing, breathing through his mouth because of a stopped up nose, etc. It seemed to be a lite case so we gave it a day and 1/2 to clear up on it's own. But evidently it doesn't work like that in casts so I took him to the vet. Got a couple of injections for fluid and antibiotics and a can of special food to help him keep hydrated and keep his protein and calorie intake in range.
We didn't see any change until the end of the 2nd day. But now after 5 days he's free and clear. We also had him tested for FIV and Leukemia. He's fine. All that for only 135 bux. Cool beans.
But wait!
2 days after we get Cody to the vet, Dink, or youngest (9 mo old came down with the same thing. We pulled the trigger (sorry
) pretty quick on him cause we knew where it was headed.
Back to the vet for another set of injections and another can of special food and another battery of tests for FIV and Leukemia....and another 135 bux. Well alrighty then! Tain't like that's just a whole lot of money. I KNOW it can get very expensive. And now we KNOW that Cody and Dink do not have either FIV or leukemia and that's a comfort.
Dink's symptoms came on hard and fast. Poor little guy was absolutely miserable. Much difficulty breathing and his eyes were discharging a lot of mucus-like stuff. We got home from the vets about 10 AM and by 2 PM he was breathing much easier and able to get some sleep. By 6 PM he was eating again and no longer breathing through his mouth. When we woke up in the morning his eyes were clear and he seemed fine. Playin' and sleepin' and playing tag with Cody and Duke.
Well now we are watching Duke (he's the oldest at 3 years) closely. So far he is symptom free. I'm starting to let myself hope that he is not gonna come down with this too. But at least if he does we have a plan.
Now about Myah our new-found outside cat that we have been feeding and watering and watching out for for the last few days. As we expected progress how ever positive was slow, extremely slow. Cats are a lot harder to make friends with than dogs...and you have to keep on proving your friendship with a cat every day. It take a lot of work. It takes a lot of patience. And it takes a lot of time.
So, as I said, we were bopping right along and doing alright and then I had to mow the yard. She is living under our Morgan Building in the back yard. I told Miss Pam that there was a chance she'd sky-up when I got near with the mower and weedeater. Especially if she has kittens under there. She'd move 'em in a heart beat. But still, I gotta mow the yard, right? Myah is gonna have to make an effort if she wants to be part of this outfit and that's just how it is.
So I put out her fresh water and a bowl of Iams that evening as usual and in the morning it was still there. Hmmmmm. I took it back in the house and non of the guys would touch it. Fine. No big deal. A little later I put out a can of Friskies and again, no takers. I didn't put out any thing for her but water that evening.
The next morning I decided to give it one more try. I was sure she was getting used to the regular feedings and would come back at some point to see what was going on with it. I put her out a can of her favorite and by the time I got back in the house and looked out the window she was eating her food.
So now she is back eating twice a day and hanging out under the yard building. And I think we are still making progress too because she has come up on the deck twice that we've seen. I'm waiting for the time she comes to the back door and starts demanding to be fed.
Then I'll know we have got her for sure.
Her shoulder injury is looking really well hair is growing back already and I can see no sign of infection.
This cat wranglin' bidness is somethin' else. But we are having a good time with it all. The boys are all fine for the moment and Myah seems to be willing to forgive me for mowing the yard. We'll see how she tolerates it next time.
