N-frame, 4", .357, M-28-2. #510582. Slight line around cyl. otherwise looks unused. Original box dated inside its lid April 1955, no papers except holster ad. Box a bit bulgy, no scuffs or damage, numbered to the gun. Original wrap paper included, is a bit whitish here & there.

Ask is $475., cash & carry.

PS...note late box date....?? Did they still have pre-1980 guns warehoused??? Ruger was deal 'sweetner'.........got a bit of a discount this way & Ruger puts my 686 back into the display box rather than in the deer hunting field!!!!

That's a very good price, but not a steal in these parts. You're about $100 (maybe a bit more) ahead of the game at that price. I would probably pick it up.

An almost new in the box , 28-2 would sell for around $ 750 here .
I'd say you got a very good deal .

If it's a 28-2 , it wasn't made in 1955. 28-2 started approx.1961.

A 28-2 should have an N-prefix ser.no.

Something made in 1955 would have an S-prefix.

Serial number is on the bottom of the grip frame.

A few comments:

The Serial number appears to be missing either an S or N prefix.

Where does "April 1955" appear on the box lid? Is it printed or handwritten? That date is too early for any model marked S&W, and easily a decade too early for a 28-2.

You clearly did not pay too much for a high condition 28-2 with original stocks, box and even some papers although in some areas you might have paid a few months too early. The correct box is the hard part. Papers and accessory packages are regularly sold in the classifieds.

I would have jumped right on that revolver, for that price. A N-Frame for less than $500 is a pretty good buy, at least where I live. Ray

I just returned from a small Yuma gun show and the cheapest S&W handgun I saw today was a blued m 10 with 5"BBL with box only, seemed pretty nice, for $425.00. Everything else was $500.00 or higher. Did not even see a m 28 at any price.

I love N-frames, but they made a lot of model 28s. I would call it a good price, but not crazy good. The market is settling back down.

I think they just printed inside the box lid the date of the copyright or something. I tried to buy a model 36 from a dealer about 6 months ago. He was asking too much because he said it was made in 1955. It was printed on the inside of the lid. It was a Bangor Punta box probably made in the 70s but the gunshop owner was convinced he had a 1955 model and had it priced accordingly.

All N frames are getting scarce. I bought a 4" 28-2 in the original box on a FTF sale just a few years ago for $250.00. Prior to that I found a 6" pre 28 five screw with diamond magnas for $200.00. The show I went to today had four or five 28's priced between $650 and $800. I'm glad I don't need one. I did see a 4" 624 for $650 that I would have bought if I didn't already have one.

Smith did not waste anything. The box marked 1955 was used for many many years, so as welldoya said, it is a copyright date and does not date the box or the gun.

$475 around here for that gun would have had me reaching for the plastic.

1955 is a copywrite date for the box as noted above. The ink stamped date was used when a gun was returned to the factory for svc/repair. I have a model 34 returned around the same time that was so stamped. The box is marked "S" for stocks, which suggests the target grips are not original. This is also why the box is a little bulgy.

I cant make anything out of the ink smear under the April 1983 date. Might have been the edge of the stamp.... ???

What is the significance of the green label that hides part of the serial....plainly marked MAR.

I asked about the 4"display box as I have all the N frames I have in the display boxes & will display this one with the rest since I can get a 4'barrel box. I put my 686 & M-48, 6", in a loose boxes I got at shows.....the box re-builder guy attends the same shows.

If anyone cares, Luger on the right is Frank Sinatra's WW 2 obtained during USO tours

Box appears to have the "N" covered with a sticker. Serial number dates it to probably 1978, maybe early 79. Good buy at that price. Want to sell it?
