NEWBIE - M&P15OR??

Hey guys I'm new to the board. Been reading for the last few weeks as I began my search for an AR. I think I've come across a pretty good deal for today's gun prices. Cabela's has the OR model for $850. Normally priced at $1099.

I've read good things about this model. Any negative comments?

No negative comments as it's the first AR I purchased and it's been flawless through around 6,000 rounds.

The only thing I'll point out is the obvious. It doesn't come with sights so there's an added cost if you are going to use them. If you're just going to add a magnified optic or red dot without backup sights, then you're good to go. If you are going to add sights, then it's going to cost you. A good, iron front sight is likely going to run you in the $80 range. Then you'll need a rear sight as well. Also, if you ever want to go with a longer rail that covers the gas block, you'll definitely have to replace the one that is on there. If you get an AR with an A2 front sight, you have the option of shaving it down and sliding a rail over it.

Other than that, it's a solid AR.

I was aware of having to purchase an iron front site. But is there a larger quad rail that is manufactured that could fit over the gas block so that you wouldn't have to replace the current one?

I don't think so. The front block is too bulky and wouldn't fit inside a free float quad rail. If you stay with a carbine length quad rail you wouldn't have to worry about it since it doesn't need to cover the block. You would only run into problems if you wanted to go with a longer rail. The only option I can think of would be to run something like the Troy Charley or Delta rail. They have a cut out to allow the stock front block to work.

This is the Delta on my Sport. Charley is a quad rail design.

How DO you handle an M&P 15 without a load-assist and a spring-loaded dust cover? Does it still work????

Don't know......... but the charging handle and trigger work just fine!!!!!

The 15OR is a great choice. All good stuff, great life time warrantee from S&W... you can't go wrong. It too was my first AR. I think I used a cheap red dot first, before spending a good chunk for an Eotec red dot and magnifier. Later on, I changed out my hand guards to some free floating ones and picked up my favorite iron sights by Diamondhead .... As for cutting an A2 sight down, you still have to remove it to take the handguard cup off... so, no advantage there. The gas block isn't welded on... If you want a good AR... it's great platform to start out with..

No. That's just silly talk. It's pinned like any other quality AR.

Thanks for all the responses. Plan on picking up my gun later this week. The current plan is to pick up a Bushnell TRS-25 for now. Eventually put it on a riser and throw some Diamondheads on it for BUIS. Can't wait to get started.

Thanks guys! I've spent a lot of times on this board and other forums and a lot of guys seemed very pleased with the Busnell. Cabela's actually has it marked down to like $69 for their Black Friday sale if anybody's in need of one.

what do you plan on doing with it... ? I bought all kinds of slings for clandestine operations.... breaking down doors... fighting in the jungle, desert, woods and snow..... but so far, every time I go to the range ..... I take them off...

Mostly range shooting and varmint hunting. I just want something I can throw on it when we're out in the field chasing down coyotes.

I went with the Magpul MS3 Sling in the Coyote Color. I had a gift certificate at a LGS. It was $59 + tax. It is a two point or one point sling. Haven't used it yet, but will once I get my MP15. Currently on my 15-22. I did have to get a QD Mount from Magpul that went on the front hand guard. My 15-22 has the built in QD in the lower on the Magpul MOE version.

No negatives, but you will easily spend a few hundred more for sights and a good Aimpoint optic.

Remember no plastic front sights on that gas block. Also remember when buying front sights that the rail on the gas block on the S&W is the same height as the receiver flat top, as if you had a continuous rail. Buy accordingly as some sights are set up for a front gas block rail which is in a lower plane than the receiver rail. Buy one for a gas block rail that is the same height as the receiver flat top rail.

You can cut the cuff off, it's not hard to do at all.

I went with the VTAC. Great 2 point if you plan on carrying across the chest.
