re: Australia gun control

It's been a while, but I seem to remember a picture of a 'dozer or backhoe pushing around a huge pile of firearms confiscated by the Australian government. Anyone have that picture or a link to it?

I'm guessing that before long you won't need to go all the way to Oz for such photos. Here's some folks in Connecticut lining up to register their long guns...

I can't believe people would comply with registration.

You can't believe why people would comply with registration? I'll tell you why. They are complying with registration to avoid the short term criminal consequences of being caught with an unregistered gun. However, when the SHTF, or the boot kicks in the front door, those registered guns better be well and truly hidden, and I don't mean in your closet or under your bed.

That was a rhetorical statement. I am amazed people just went along and registered their guns. As you said, it might be easier short term, but it's a bad long term decision.

I am having a hard time to believe some of you guys are "amazed" or "surprised" with the actions of law abiding gun owners.

What were you guys expecting?

Oh yeah, time to time I see here those vigilante types thumping their chests and writing those heroic statements that they will never, ever do this or do that to comply with the new gun laws if it changes or bla bla bla...

But in reality I don't believe any law abiding individual who own gun/s will stand in the way the LAW.
You may like it or not, but if YOUR legislator LEGALLY changed the law I don't believe any gun owner have any legs to stand against it other than the challenging the law in the courts.

On the one hand we are proud defenders of the gun rights for LAW ABIDING citizens, then in the next sentence we seem to surprise when these LAW ABIDING citizens comply with the LAW...

C'mon guys, let's make sense...

I can. When we're talking rifles and shotguns these are guns we all use for hunting. I can visualize myself out hunting and being approached by a game warden. License? check. Gun registered? Let me check the serial number. Not registered. Here's a citation for court and I'll be taking the gun for evidence. Virtually all these people have never been to court in their lives and the idea of a criminal record can have lasting consequences. Stand on principal if you want, but that has consequences.

Sure it has consequences, as it did for those who supported the American Revolution, the drafting and signing of the Constitution etc. A minority stood up to the oppression, the majority stood by and did what it was told. I suspect it's always been this way. People in some states seem to have adopted a it's just the way it is mindset, that's going to lead to one final result, a complete gun ban. What's one guy supposed to do? Good question, but it's not just one guy affected. I don't recall seeing mass demonstrations, recall elections etc like I did in CO, maybe I missed them, I'm not a huge daily news guy.

I'm not criticizing individual gun owners, I'm saying it has to stop somewhere and people need to actively oppose these types of things. I'm also saying being from a culture that grows up hunting, shooting etc, I struggle imaging how a state could be so 180 degrees different and completely ignore the 2nd A, call it a disconnect on my part from a sociological standpoint, not an intended insult.

Well, we always refer to ourselves as the "Law-Abiding".

The law-abiding gun-owners have been demonized, etc.....
The law-abiding gun-owners are the low-hanging fruit, etc.....
The law-abiding gun-owners are easier for creating photo-ops by seizing their firearms than actually having to fight real criminals, etc....

I'm sure the perspective in CA etc is different than where I live and other places in this country. There's a reason things aren't the way they are where you are here and in other places, the Government's here know the public will not stand for this, go along with it or fail to replace them for trying.

It's not a matter of making sense or chest thumping, it's a matter of the serious cultural differences and the mindset differences in various areas of the country.

You get the Government you settle for and a majority of people here, as elsewhere will not settle for the Government's you have in CA, CT etc. We aren't burdened with all of the Anti/Blue "voters" you are. That's not a knock on the gun owners etc in these states, it's just demographic fact, you are simply outnumbered, that's not your fault. I guess as I said in my post above, I'm confused by the lack of active resistance to such measures anymore in certain states, it's almost a beaten philosophy it appears. Maybe I'm wrong, it just seems that way on the outside looking in.

No doubt you are right about that.

When these good law abiding citizens get their guns confiscated and they will, I wonder if they will regret obeying the State. I think they should have gone to town square En mas with their guns and formed a column of fours with four ranks until they ran out of people to continue and a spokesman should have asked the government to step up and register and then they should have turned about and marched out of the town square as the brave Government Official stepped forward.

But no they complied with an immoral unjust and misguided law and they will ultimately pay for their obedience.

I don't have a picture I can post, but I do have one in my memory bank, I was there when the buy back first started.:( and it wasn't pretty.

Aloha,

A little OT.

I am an American of Japanese Ancestry.

NOT, Japanese-American.

I have friends whose parents were interned.

I had friends and relatives in the 442/100 Nisei Regiment.

I married a girl of Germanic ancestry from a Midwestern state.

I had to educate her on the Internment of Americans of Japanese Ancestry.

She really never knew what happened and was Shocked about internment.

In Hawaii, All guns are registered.

I asked my Wife what her reaction would be IF internment were to happen again.

Would she let me go alone, go with me or .......

Her answer, "That's what we have guns for"

Many of my friends of Japanese ancestry own ARs and the like.

They too have had parents, relatives and friends either interned or Veterans of 442/100.

They all say, "Never Again"

There is "resentment" among the new generation of American Asians when they learn what happened.

While those in states that have these laws who have have these guns and did not register them they could be considered "criminals" yet what exactly is going to be done about it? Nothing.... Talk to any state with any prison / correctional facility and the #1 problem is always bed space. Its not as if all of these people are all going to be rounded up and thrown in jail over an un lawful and un just law to begin with.

Its almost as if the states are playing the bully role who say....well you wont let us ban those guns so we will make you register them and if you dont we we will consider you breaking the law and a criminal! Then the people in mass's stand up to the bully and say screw you your not taking our rights away and the bully does not expect this kind of back lash or disobedience and then sulks into the corner now thinking "what am I going to do" b/c I talk a big game but its all talk and no substance.

Why don't you know all of us Texas gun owners are buying them guns and ammo just to turn it in to the government when
the government says they are not allowed, or when some executive order gets issued. Governments come and go and
so do flags. Texas has flown six, but who says it might never fly a seventh. As for me my first allegiance belongs to Texas.
If I lived where that were happening now, I would move and
take my money and my guns with me to Texas.

Those legislators work for us, we decide what we want as a public. its not up to them to change laws or make laws as they see fit. Were these places that now have to register certain types of guns have a public vote before hand to establish that this is what the public as a whole wanted?
