What is your "go to" deer rifle?

2008 Remington 700 CDL in .270 WCF. My wife bought the rifle and it's case for me, my mother in law bought the scope, a Fullfield II. I've shot an antelope, a few deer and about as many hogs. No elk, yet.
Seems to be a consistent MOA performer with Core-Lokt 150gr and Fusion 130gr ammo.

My first deer rifle was a Winchester M94, then Marlin 336. Over the years I've gone through a bunch of others, only to go full circle back to my 30-30 roots. In TEXAS, it's all I need.

Browning a bolt medallion chambered in 30-06. my dad bought it on my 16th birthday. had it 24 years and it still makes 1 hole at 100 yards. wish i had a picture for you guys. thanks dad!

After going through Ruger 77 270,Browning BAR 270 and loving the light weight of a Micro Medalion 308 I found a stainless synthetic Model Seven Remington 308 which is extremely accurate with a light trigger and extremely tough. After 12 years up and down tree stands and at least 60 deer it looks brand new.I brush with 4-O stell wool to remove scratches and it looks pristine.I went through a "break in" when first using it and now it has the brightest easy to clean bore I have ever seen.

Somebody above mentioned their first deer rifle was a Model 94 Winchester .30-30, well that was mine too. I killed my first deer with that rifle when I was 13 in 1967.

Later on we all got the idea we needed high power bolt action rifles with scopes. I hunted with them for many years, eventually losing the concept of a woods gun with iron sights.

About 15 years ago I went back to iron sights. I am a collector and shooter of double rifles, so I had gone back to shooting iron sighted rifles for fun. It dawned on me that I should go back to hunting with them. The last five deer I have killed all were killed with one shot from an iron sighted double rifle; mostly from antiques. Several were killed with doubles that have damascus barrels. All were with proper ammunition of my own making.

These are my go-to deer rifles:

I really had forgotten how enjoyable it is to tromp through the woods with a real woods rifle. I'm older and wiser now.

CptCurl..... all else aside.......sweeeeettttt!!!

Mine; for the past 25 years, is a Ruger 77 International (aka Mannlicher) in .243 w/ a little 1-4x20 scope..... perfect for "walking in Penn's woods"

I'm looking at a CZ that will give it a run for the money........

This one was not a fancy, expensive rifle but they are known for their accuracy and fast handling. The Model 600's never won any beauty contests but you will be hard pressed to find anyone that owns one that wants to part with it. It put the smackdown on a few deer before the herds pretty much disappeared in Southern California. It is so familiar in my hands that I don't even have to think about it.

SKS in 7.62x39 . I believe I paid $72.99 plus tax when they were being imported en mass about 20 years ago. :)

I also have a pre-64 Winchester 94 in .30-30 that I really like. As a practical matter, there is little difference on deer.

Mine is my 870 Remington 12ga, bought in 1966. For the last dozen years it's been a Marlin Model 94 in .357, both work fine for areas I hunt. Before the Remington, it was a Stevens 12ga. single shot. Yep, that worked too.

For years it was a Colt- Sauer in .270, several years ago I became enamored with a Browning A-Bolt II in .300 WSM. I pulled the scope (Swarovski 3 x 9) from the .270, and it's a marriage made in heaven. As a southpaw I love the Browning 60degree bolt turn and the short mag. pull. As a plus I can shoot everything from TX white tail to elk with one rifle.

I've owned my BLR the longest. Bought it in 1983.

Just in case you think it only kills spikehorns...

I took these two Adirondack 8-pointers with in in my youth.

Those mountains are rough hunting, but the Browning goes the extra mile and is easy to tote...

These days I hunt alone alot and mostly for the freezer.

Remington 760 pump carbine (18" barel) in 30-06. Bought it in 1965; it has a new buttstock. Weaver K 2.5 in Redfield mounts so I can get more eye relief. Killed a couple of deer, four caribou when I was in Alaska and two moose. Probably the most practical rifle I own.

Marlin 30-30 lever action with peep sights. Around here it is mostly wooded and shots rarely take place at over 100 to 150 yards and many are 50 to 75 yard shots. That ole Marlin just gets her done.

Since it upsets some I will not call it a tack driver, but it is very accurate at those distances, and the deer in this area are not big relative to some other ares so the 30-30 does the job with some to spare.

Many around here use a Marlin .357 Magnum, but I like a 30-30 for deer.
