BLACKBERRY AND POSION IVY vines cleared during the cold wearther. fininshed clearing what was trying to grow back last week. did not get all of the roots out. must have got posion ivy when i thought the roots were dead. i know washing w/ cold water and not drying w/ a towel. what are some your remidies for drying the blisters? haven't had it for 30 + years. used to get it from the wind blowing. researched some homeopathics salts, which i used years ago. the RHUS TORICODENDRON 6X HPUS seems to be a suggested homeopathic. so it's early spring, your suggestions.

I was infected with poison ivy many many times in my early working career (surveyor). Highly allergic; one spot on forearm would spread to side, chest, face, etc.. Any home remedies that I tried would not have any affect on the infection (in my experience). A quick trip to the doctor for a shot of cortisone (if I remember correctly) and it would be gone in short order.

After the many instances of being infected my body eventually built up a tolerance to poison ivy and I no longer have issue with it. Old timers had stated that a tolerance could be attained and it proved true.

Good luck with yours.

Go to your doctor and get a steroid pack, immediately ;)

BTW, poison ivy doesn't spread. It may appear to do so because some blisters take days longer to present themselves but it does not spread. I used to be mostly immune, able to crawl in it in my youth but now I'm very allergic. Also, DEAD poison ivy is NOT safe poison ivy. The oils still exist and the oils are the irritant. That's why you are always warned when burn brush to know what you're burning. Inhaling the smoke can be fatal.

It's also not transferable human-to-human by contact with the blisters, as some folks believe. The oil from the plant is what causes the rash; wherever the oil contacts the skin and isn't promptly washed off completely, there the rash will be. You definitely can get it from your family pet that gets the oil on its fur and comes in contact with you.

I was highly allergic as a kid who loved the woods, so I think I built up some resistance to it. Salt water (swimming in the ocean) was great for drying up the blisters. Otherwise, it was calamine lotion until the stuff went away. Maybe there's better stuff around today -- thank goodness, I haven't had to find out!

There used to be injections that would help prevent it, which I took one summer to good effect, but then they took them off the market for some reason.

Worst case I ever got was after a camping trip when we apparently burned some vines in the campfire, and the smoke wrapped me up with it. Missed school several days, and my face looked like something out of a horror movie!

My Wee Tree farm -34 acres is absolutely covered with PI , but I like Flgolfher have built up a tolerance to it and am no longer bothered by it, THANK GOD! I have some vines as big as a mans thigh growing up the trees. Once I tried to pull one of those biguns down with a big excavator and all I succeeded in doing was to break off the top 20 feet or so of the tree, which promptly crashed into the blessedly substantial steel roof of the poor machine. I`ll not do that again!

The cure for me is a trip to the Doctor.

However, if I know I've gotten into poison ivy, I just rinse the area affected with water ASAP, if not sooner, and it usually will not effect me.

Poison ivy is nasty stuff, I can dream about it and wake up with it. It can take the fun out of summer because I'm always watching for it. I can identify it going down the highway at 70 MPH when it's on a fence. Worst time I ever got it was in the winter and you can't see it, I rubbed up against a vine. I once read a story of a scientist rubbing a cotton jersey work glove in it and putting the glove away for 10 years, a volunteer still got poison ivy from it. I think the oil is called Urushiol.

As was previously mentioned, it is an oil so the best thing to do is to first wash your skin with an alcohol sanitizer. Then wash off with liberal amounts of soap and water. As for the clothes, I have soaked mine first in Lestoil before sending through the wash several times. A nasty plant that can even cause a rash when you burn it and are downwind in the smoke.

As for treatment, I can't improve on what has been previously stated. Best of luck on speedy recovery.

How bad can it get? Well check-out the Poision Ivy Hall of Fame.

I pour bleach on poison ivy which seems to dry it up fast.

My Dr recommended Domeboro made by Bayer. It looks like salt, it is mixed in warm water and applied in compresses it helped dry it out.
It is Aluminum Sulfate Tetrodecahydrate Calcium Acetate Monohydrate
Good Luck!
I believe I bought it at CVS or Walgreens

Mouthwash poured over any suspected area will dry the oil, then wash with soap and water. Used to get it all the time until I discovered the mouthwash cure.

When I had it bad, it made dollar bill sized splotches on me. Most of what I used had little effect. I raced on that Saturday, it was 106 degrees at the track, and I was wearing full leathers. Man was I weak, but after I left the track and took a long bath, I didn't itch anymore. Maybe from all the sweat.

I read that jewel weed leaves, stems and flowers, mashed and rubbed on the affected areas works.
I tried it once and it seemed to help.

I have not had to try it again and am grateful for that.
