I did quite a bit a research before choosing the Shield, and it was the best option for my intended use. So I got the Shield 9mm about two weeks ago. This past weekend was the first time I was able to fire it. I put about 60 rounds of WWB through it flawlessly. After I put the 60 rounds through it I put it back in its case. After picking up my target and spent shells, I opened the case to clean my gun. I picked up the gun and a piece fell out of the magazine well. I'll admit I'm a gun novice so I went to the gun shop that sold me the Shield and asked for their opinion. He believed it was an ejector pin. Let me add here that I had not broken down the gun anymore than the suggested way in the manual. The shop employee was very surprised it had broken and sent it to S&W for repairs. I still believe the Shield is the best weapon for my intended use and I am just posting this here for future gun owners who are doing their research like I was a couple months ago. Again, I have high praise for how it shoots and I am excited to fire it more.... after it comes back from the factory.

Nothing is perfect and anything produced by humans can have a fault. Thousands of them have been sold and most have had no problems.. Mine is almost 2 years old and still looks and functions like new.

I'm not upset about my purchase at all. I'm just trying to inform the forum on possible problems they may run into with the Shield. No love lost.

Yea that suck but hang in there it will be worth it. I sent a new 438 back to them that had problems and had it back in 12 days and that was counting the weekend.

My Shield 40 runs thru ammo at an alarming rate. It looks like the 6 and 7 round magazines do little to cut ammo consumption.

Both my Shield 40 and 9mm have been flawless in function and performance while maintaining amazing accuracy. Hundreds of rounds of various factory ammo digested and spewed out without so much as a single hiccup.

I'm sure there are thousands of satisfied shield owners for every one who has a problem. If there is a more reliable compact semi-auto for the money, I am not aware of it. S&W will make it right if there is a problem with yours. I sent them my 20 year old 5906 that started having an occasional FTE, and they replaced the extractor, test fired it and returned it to me in about 3 weeks with no charges or questions asked. They even paid shipping both ways. Top notch service in my experience.

Yeah, failures happen and I'm sorry for you, but this...
He believed it was an ejector pin.
Is unacceptable. The guy at the store should know what it is. If he doesn't, he should get someone who does. The M&P is not a complicated gun.

Check out this thread and see if you can find what part it was that fell out: http://smith-wessonforum.com/smith-wesson-m-p-pistols/341115-m-p-parts-identification.html

I wish you hadn't sent it off so fast. I'd like to see a pic of the part and gun. Maybe we could have figured out why this particular part fell out.

Did you do a function test after the part fell out? Maybe it wasn't even part of the gun.

If it was your ejector (not extractor) retaining pin that fell out, then based on how the Shield is designed that would be a serious problem. Highly unlikely if the gun shot 60 rounds successfully.

The part most reported to "fall out" of the Shield magazine well is the yellow painted sear deactivation lever installed at S&W by an old drunk guy on a Friday afternoon. Sometimes that drunk guy likes to mess with your head by rubbing off the yellow paint so that it looks like a more important part when it falls out.

It was number 30, the sear disconnect lever. The shop employee showed me the display model and it appeared a pin that is located inside a small spring that holds the lever was missing. Like I said, I'm a gun novice so I did not want to do anything with the gun until I sought out someone else's opinion. Thanks for the link to that thread btw.

I figured it was either that or the magazine disconnect lever. This is not the first instance of this that has been posted here.

Yes, the employee is correct. What's missing is the pin that holds the sear disconnect and spring in place. The gun will work fine without those components and it is not unsafe. However, they are a good safety check to ensure the gun is incapable of firing before taking the slide off.

It's not hard to install that pin and S&W would probably send you one for free. Even so, it's a good thing that you sent it back. They will give the gun a once over to ensure nothing else is missing.
