After a lot of thinking, and going back and forth, today I finally committed and bought a new 629. When I was 16 years old, I scrounged and saved and bought a brand new (with my parents help due to my young age) stainless steel 629 .44 mag with a 6" barrel, and loved the thing like you wouldn't believe. We had a bunch of fun but sadly...too buy a girl a ring I sold it in the mid 90's. Directly after selling it I wanted it back but the deal was made and I couldn't reverse it. I've wanted another ever since! With neither the girl, or ring, or revolver I needed to replace it so here it is, some 20 years later and I did it. I chose the 4" barrel this time after a lot of thought, and I think I made the right decision. Right after getting home I cleaned the barrel and cylinders and headed out back to the range. I paced off 50 feet and set a target frame in the ground with a paper target, and went to sighting it in. A few sight adjustments later and about 18 rounds and I put on a fresh target and shot a final 5 shot group of the evening. WOW. the thing shoots. And wow, those Federal 240 grain hollow points are HOT! I plan to leave POI where it is for now as I really plan on shooting mostly .44 specials. I have the brass, bullets, and primers and am searching for a powder like Unique ( I used Unique back in the day and made some pleasant reloads to shoot). Anyway, I know it has the lock on it, and the trigger and hammer are not forged like my old gun had, and the finish isn't as shiny but I really like her! I'm on cloud 9 and can't wait to really get familiar with it's trigger and see what I can really do once I get to know it better. I'll include a picture of the first group after sighting in. In the near future she'll be wearing wood grips but the rubber is OK for now.
And a quick word for you young whipper snappers. Don't ever sell one of your guns, ever. If you really need the money see if a family member will give you a loan instead. You can pay back a loan but you cant always get a cherished firearm back so don't ever let them slip away.
PS, I aim to take a deer with this thing this coming fall!
