Will you do this as a CCW?

UNCLE BEN

YEAH I KNOW. I saw the movies and read the comics as a kid too. The term & current events had my Spidey senses tingling & struck my funny bone. IMO you can't begin to compare a purse snatch to a mass shooting event. As stated SO MANY things could have gone wrong, suppose the snatchers were armed, panicked and shot the GG/ Lady clinging to her purse/Bystanders. A CCL IS NOT a permit to become a crime fighting superhero. Take down the plate# & leave it to the police. If the BG's had shown a gun/knife, it's another story. The victim put herself in more danger than the bad guys, by not letting go.

I agree with the comments so far. This video doesn't show all or tell all. But I think he was wrong even though things turned out well. Good have very easily gone bad.

A CCW is not a license to act as a cop. Because of our limited resources, if things do go bad we have very few options to fall back on. Not a good thing when firearms and bad guys are present.

I witnessed a purse snatching a few years ago. Heard the commotion, looked over and saw a lady all of a hundred pounds running towards me with someone else's purse. Or what I THOUGHT was someone else's purse.

She ran right by me. I could easily have clothes lined her and stopped the event but didn't. Why? Even though armed, my wife was with me. The place was very crowded and I had no idea if any accomplices were present.

I was right. It was someone else's purse. But at the time I wasn't 100% sure so I witnessed the event and gave cops a good description and license number.

Video surveillance helped in apprehending the snatcher and her accomplice. Later in court, we found that the guy standing right behind me was the purse snatchers brother!

Lessons to be learned here. There are cameras everywhere these days. They can help you or work against you. And not all is as it seems or looks.

BEWARE THE TAIL GUNNER!!

If she held onto that purse, I believe that she very well could have been in danger of being dragged possibly run over by the back tires. That being said, I am in Illinois, so depending on which part of the state you are in could very likely change the outcome. North of I80, the good samaritan would probably be hung today. South and he would recieve a pat on the back(I hope).

No I wouldn't do it unless I thought someone's life was in danger. I wouldn't escalate a theft into a possibly life-threatening situation.

I aint got as many years left as most of you do. However I could not live with myself or look in a mirror if I didnt try to stop a purse snatcher. If I didnt try my wife for sure would. I just recall another incident many years ago. I was again riding my harley and seen a black couple arguing and tugging over a purse. I instantly recognized the man as a belligerent type where I worked as a guard that I had to handle a time or two. As I pulled up she indicated she was okay and waved me off. I left.
Not much later he was arrested as a suspect in a missing person case as he was last seen leaving a night club with a woman that disappeared.
He hung tough but several years later they found her body buried in his back yard!

I'm (as are others, apparently) fed up with thugs doing as they please, so fighting back at any level is a step in the right direction.

In 1961 I had just hired into the Grand Teton National Park. I was downtown Jackson. They used to have a tourist attraction of the hanging of "Clover the killer". Several times every day they would rope off the town square, run a stagecoach through with outlaws chasing it etc. I had seen the act so it was no novelty. Many tourists would be there, anywhere from hundreds to over a thousand lined up watching.
I came out of a store and seen a hell of a fist fight going on. I thought, boy these guys are good! Soon it dawned on me it was for real! It was between two passing through rodeo riders and two drunk locals, one I later found out was a marine deserter and the other a local indian. The marine was down and out. His girlfriend was crying and trying to drag his almost unconscious carcass to their car. While there were a huge crowd of people watching, not one would help her. I did. I got him up over my shoulder and he come to and thought I was one of his antagonize`rs he started cuffing me and bit my ear. Soon he was unconscious again and I loaded him in the car. I went back to watch the action. The cowboy that had punched the marine out was no longer fighting but his partner was literally beating that indian to death! The indian was bleeding all over and even from his ears! The indian was very drunk, bawling and now crawling on his knees after the cowboy who was trying to walk off in a bit of I think, embarrassment. He swore violently at the cowboy and said come to me you ------! The cowboy walked backed and was kicking the stuffing out of him! There looked to be somewhere around at least 500 people watching this and not one trying to stop him! Finally I went and held the insane indian down and told the cowboy to walk off.
I have never seen a more bloody fight. I was totally disgusted as not one of those many men even in front of their familys would not stick their neck out! I did meet all four later separately at various times. Right after that I went in the cowboy bar with about 4 other co workers and the owner asked me if my friends were at least as old as me. I didn't lie, at 20 I was the youngest of them. We were set for the season. One more thing bothered me about it. Oddly, not one city cop or deputy seemed to be present where usually at least one or two should have been.
I never have got hurt sticking my nose in trouble and cant well relate to the mind my own business thinking. I was a guard for over 35 years after these events or off the job but of course that is different.
I may be a little naive but I just dont do well with all these cautious pre overthinking yeah, but what if`s sinerio` s.
On the deal above I will admit all involved were pretty well used up before I intervened.

All it takes for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing.
I really like this quote. It summarizes what is a huge problem today.

However, it also depends on what "good" men do. If they start breaking the law in the name of defeating evil, where does the line between evil and good get drawn?

Use only as much force as necessary to stop the person. In this case, tackling the thief probably would have been a much better choice.

You can't tackle someone in a car.

Ok, now that I made an idiot out of myself and actually watched the video...

I would have tried to block the car first but I don't see how the Good Samaritan was wrong with how he handled it.

I can't fault the guy, I dont know if I'd do it but I can't fault him

One in a million, (well maybe not a million), good result in a scenario like this. We'd always like to see the dirtbag get his, but things can go pear-shaped in a big hurry. And at the end of the day, it's just stuff in a purse, 90+% of which can be replaced. In this situation, the good guy has played his hand. He's only got one more option, opening fire. Suppose the bad guys decide since it's two to one, they like their odds. No, too many bad outcomes here for the contents of a purse.

In Kansas, you can act in someone's behalf the same as if the crime was against you. So yes, I would hope I could do the same thing. There is already enough people who don't help those that can't as it is. I can't imagine witnessing something like this happen and just standing by.
Just my opinion of course.

Same in SC. You can act on someone's behalf who is in danger as if it were you.

I'd like to think I would, but it can't guarantee how I'd act in a spur-of-the-moment situation.

Some good reading in this thread. I am one of the ones who would have liked to help but would put my family, and house, and financial future ahead of helping a stranger.

It kind of hurts to even write that down.

On the other hand just writing the license plate down and being a good eye witness is still stepping up to do the right thing.

Some would question if she is even justified to use deadly force to protect her purse.

This scenario is why I would never recommend purse carry. Ed.

So. If the purse snatcher does not comply & tries to drive away, what do you do? Shoot him? When you draw a weapon you open the door to issues you clearly don't have time to imagine. The woman appeared to be hanging on to the purse, not trapped by the strap. Her life is only in danger if she continues to hang on. I would not put my financial well being in danger for a crime that did not pose a threat to life.
I am glad it went well for the guy but I would have gone the good witness route.
