Want to see where all the .22 LR ammo is???

These threads are always amusing. People blaming others because they can't get ammo. Calling them names and say that you hope they choke on what they own. They also expect to purchase 22lr at past historical price levels. It makes no sense. It's like me complaining that I have to pay over $3 a gallon for gas when I used to pay $0.19 a gallon, for premium no less.

Fact is we have added over 20 million new shooters to the hobby in the last 18 months or so. That is a demand profile that the manufactures were unprepared for. While CF ammo seems to have caught up 22lr has not. Several reasons are the high capacity firearms available which have attracted new 22lr shooters within the hobby. We also seem to forget about how we introduce people to the sport and that is through the use of 22 caliber handguns and rifles.

Personally I don't shoot that much 22lr, maybe 500 rounds a year but like many other gun owners I have sons, daughter in-laws and grandchildren I supply the 22lr ammo for their use to the tune of 10,000 rounds so far this year. Many gun owners also support 4H and other youth sports and those shooters are not counted in the total user base for 22lr ammunition.

As it stands manufactures running 24/7/365 can produce just under 11billion rounds per year of 22. The problem is that level of production means only 110 rounds of 22 per shooter per year. It would take 2.2 years of production to supply 2 bricks of 22lr to just 1/4 of the gun owners today. Production levels will never meet the demand. So to supply every gun owner 2 bricks a year you would need a production level of 1 trillion rounds per year. The 22lr shortage is with for a very longtime.

Lady T a lot if what you said is correct. I think this is what is frustrating people looking for 22.

I shoot a lot of competition with 22 lr. To get ammo I have had to roll out of bed early and head to Wal Mart to see if they have any and wait if they do. Then I hit the other stores around 9 am to see if I can get some 22. I have to take an early lunch to do it. There are several people I always see when I am out. I always talk to people just out of curiosity. Some are shooters just wanting to get some ammo but several are reselling it at a huge mark up. Yes they do spend the time to go get it but they have no intention of shooting it just taking advantage of people who can't get out. If they didn't buy it then it might be there at normal price for others later in the day. For a short period 22 got easier to get and Gander Mtn set a 10 box limit. That applied to bricks also. One of the gougers was in line and when they opened the door he ran in and grabbed 10 buckets of the Remington bucket of bullets. One guy confronted him and asked him if he even shot. He said nope just trying to make some money. He sells it on Gunbroker or at shows and some people buy it or he wouldn't keep doing it. These are the guys people are hating on. It is infuriating. I have now given up several 22 matches because it isn't worth it.

I am one who stands in line when there should be .22lr available. But, I have been buying for a Scout summer camp that lost its source. I "sold" 3500 rounds to the camp (a legal charity, with original receipts given to them) rounded up to the next dollar. I "made" about 70 cents for gas money. I have been "accumulating" since November. So yes, if you frequent my Wally World, I have been there often, and bought my 3 box limit. Some weeks, 3x Win 333, most 3x 50 of something that will only work in a bolt action rifle.

Now I get to find some for myself. Seems it is only getting more difficult, so I bought a Ruger Single Six - at least that way I can shoot shorts or longs that no one else is looking for.

I don't think anybody would have a problem with that. It's just the people selling it at a huge profit. I saw one of them at a gunshow selling bricks for $80. I heard a guy ask him why it was so high and he told him the manufacturers had raised the prices. I pulled the guy aside and told him the truth. I see it at every gunshow I go to.

I'm not our own worst enemy. I haven't bought a single round of 22 ammo in several years now, and have never sold any.
Same with me, I have not and will not buy any 22LR ammo at current prices.

I have a lot of .22 ammo I bought at and below $10/brick. There was a time I could have easily sold that same brick for $100 along with 7 more and bought a new TV worth $800 for only $80. I guess you can call me stupid for not selling but I just couldn't.
