617 Owners, Modifications and Why...

My 617-1 went back for an uneven b/c gap when new.I had them do an action job as well.(Generally,I think that they prefer not to do rimfires)
It came back well done, though part of the lug was brightened,so I did the rest of the gun with Flitz.I've used several types of grips over the years, but nothing beats the Nills that I have on it now.

Mine is pretty much stock except for the Copperhead oil I use in the bore. Makes them rounds much "quicker and deadlier" than std. HP.

On a serious note though, all I've done is re-tighten the extractor rod and very lightly polish the cylinder holes for super-slick extraction and ease of cleaning. This gun is a joy to carry and shoot. Bad news on critters. :D

My 6" 617 got an interior and exterior polish, a lighter rebound spring, some Hogue big butts, a Leupold Deltapoint, and plenty of speed loaders and blocks. Why? I wanted it to look and be more different than my 4".

Maybe add some blue LEDS running the lower length of the barrel.

With exception of the Allchin mount and the Burris Fastfire III red dot this is all the way it came. The trigger is fine and reliable.

Hi H Richard,
Ahhh sorry to burst in. Its my first post here & its cos I saw this post and had to ask you about the mounting of the Burris Fastfire III. I've never owned one or even seen one up close, I have a 18 month old 617 and what seems like 90 year old eyes in a 48 year old head ;-)

Looks like something that'll help me greatly, just wondering about mounting it and what parts are necessary that didn't come with it.

Thanks greatly in advance
Cheers

Hi paochow,
Just saw the Leopold Deltapoint you're running and wondering if I can pick your brain. I just asked H Richard about the Burris Fastfire III thenspotted your Leopold.

As I mentioned before I have an 18 month old 617 and 90 year old eyes in a 48 year old head ;-)

Just wondering how well you've find the optic & what parts you needed to fit to the 617 that didn't come with the optic?

I'm new to handguns (not very common thing in Australia, club use only)

Might be the big answer to my eyes
Thanks greatly in advance
Best regards

The Model 617 and its blued kin are pretty much perfect out of the box. I have two no-dash 617s and did swap out my 4" gun's trigger and hammer with S&W target items (the 6" came with them) and replaced both rear sights with the long-discontinued Millett sight (the 6" gun's sight had not yet been changed when this photo was taken).

I have about 15 pre-MIM, pre-IL S&W revolvers but these two are probably the ones that have appreciated in value the most in the time I've owned them.

Allchin mount and Burris FF 3. Made the revolver much more easier to shoot accurately.
Mine is a 10 shot 6 inch barrel model with the early aluminum cylinder which is supposed to be a no no but I bought it new and it hasn't given me any problems.
No need to do a trigger job as the factory did a great job on it.
