I recently purchased a slightly used S&W M&P 9 full size from an on line auction. It came with a hard case, 2 extra back straps, lock, manual, warranty card,7 S&W factory 17 round magazines, a Bladetech holster and a blue training gun. Also a low round count of approximately 350 to 400 rounds. I was considering some upgrades to the trigger from Apex. That's when the question came up about internal locking system and magazine disconnect. I realize this may sound stupid but how do you know if the gun has these features? The SKU is 309701. I can't find this number on the S&W web site. I did find a web site that selling a S&W M&P 9 like mine that had the same SKU #. In it's description it said.....Designed for military and police use, the Smith & Wesson M&P9 9mm Full Size Pistol w/Magazine Lock and Internal Lock delivers the reliability and performance you want. Not sure about the internal lock but if you rack the slide and take the magazine out, without any ammo in it, pull the trigger with the magazine out. The striker should not disengage if it has a magazine disconnect. Or, you can look on your side and if it's blank and does not have the writing on the side "can be fired without magazine". It has a magazine disconnect.

If it doesn't have the magazine disconnect it will have an engraving on the left side of the slide that says "Caution- Capable of Firing with Magazine Removed". No engraving = no magazine disconnect.

There will also be a small lever on the front of the sear block that the magazine pushes in when inserted and engages the sear if it does have the disconnect.

Internal lock will have a small hole in the rear of the frame on the left side (looking from the rear). If there's a plastic plug in the hole, it's not an internal lock model (or someone has removed it).

Ok it will fire with the magazine removed and is so marked as you mentioned so no magazine disconnect. The ILS is what I'm not sure of. Their is a pin on the left side of the frame with an arrow that points clock wise. Also I just was curious as to what this SKU means. In other words how does this differ from a 209001. I notice that the models that begin with 10 are 10 round capacity and 17 are 17 round capacity but when the first two digits are 20 or, as with mine, 30 I get lost. Is their anywhere that you can get a complete break down of what the numbers in the SKU represent?

The little hole on the left with the clockwise arrow is the internal lock; if it's there you have the lock.

So I'm being told that the SKU's beginning with the number 3 indicates that they come with 3 magazines and are a law enforcement model which has night sights (which mine does). Now to figure out the 09 (9mm?) and the 701.

The good thing about not having the lock, you can put the apex ram in it if you want that " reset" click to be a lil more pronounced than stock.

Ok Bkreutz I just saw your post. Obviously I have one with no internal locking system. Thanks for that information.

They all came with the hole and the arrow, the internal lock was an "unpopular" item (to say the least;)) Smith dropped it where they legally could. It's not unusual to see one without the plug because it's easy to forget when pulling the sear block out. I've attached a picture of the left side of mine, you can see the plug and curved arrow just below the slide serrations. (the smaller hole behind it is the roll pin that holds the guts in.) I can't imagine a LE pistol having an internal lock (but then again, stranger things have happened)

None of my M&P's have the internal lock and none of them have the hole and arrow molded in.

Must be a date related thing, my 9L Core does, my FS9 does, and my 9c doesn't??. The Core is the newest but I think the Performance Center has a stock of older frames that they work from.

Could be. My 9C and 9L are both dated January '14, my M&P 45 is a few years old and doesn't have it either.

Ok so at this point I've had the Apex Tactical forward set trigger kit and the RAM kit installed. I had to replace the sear housing block with the later 1/8 " one. That all being done when I got it back I noticed the plug was not put back in. Is this going to be a problem? If so where can I get one and what is their to putting it in?
