A friend of mine (LGS) told me that he had something new coming in. He wouldn't tell me what, today I found out it was the M&P 22 Compact. I cant wait to shoot it,but I wont be able to for a few weeks because of my job. But here it is. Ill try and get a side by side comparison between the M&P 22 vs the Compact 22.

Very little on the Internet thus far. Do us all a favor and strip both guns down as well during your comparison. It would be interesting to see what changes internally have been made since this is a S&W manufactured model. I like others hope the rear sight will work on the original model. I know the magazines are apparently different and not compatible.

I know I wishing, but does it come with a thread adapter?

Also looking forward to the side by side comparison...

Yes, it has a threaded barrel. This is from the S&W website:

Other Features
• Reduced scale version of the full-size M&P Pistol
• Threaded barrel - 3/8"x24 takes 3/8"x24 to 1/2"x28 adapter
• 2 magazines included
• Ambidextrous manual safety
• Reversible magazine release
• Picatinny-style accessory rail
• Magazine Safety - Will not fire without magazine inserted
• Internal lock
• Captured recoil guide rod & spring for easier assembly/disassembly
• Made in USA

Why? Because it's made of fun. We shrunk our full size M&P® by 15% and replaced it with pure awesome. Yep. It's molded right in there alongside the premium features and M&P's hand-hugging grip. Sure all of that fun is hard to see, but don't worry. Whether you're shooting a tin can or hitting a full can of soda, you can make fun funner with an M&P®22 Compact.

Does 15% smaller than the original .22 pistol make it the same size as a center fire M&Pc ??

I'm guessing that since the M&P 22 was made by Walther in Germany, and this will be USA made that it will be a new mold and it sounds like the whole gun will be shrunk down.

Do we know if Smith is making this gun in Massachusetts or has it been outsourced to a Free State?

Well, one major difference is it has an internal hammer, & is hammer fired, not striker fired. I'm not interested a 22 that just kinda' looks like an M&P. S&W doesn't get it, I think what we would all like is a 22 LR conversion top end, not a stand-alone gun that's completely different from the centerfire M&Ps.

Saw one at my dealer already. Wow that was fast!! I just called Customer Service and asked 'em to make it in 9mm. Mid size M&P to compete with G19. These are cool.

Went into the Gander Mountain in Kentwood Michigan this morning and they had two of the M&P22 compacts in stock. If I didn't already have a FS M&P22, I'd have bought it on the spot. It's about the same size as a Shield, with a slightly longer barrel. The rear sight is fully click adjustable for windage and elevation. The captured recoil spring has a buffer added to the front end of it. The trigger is typical S&W, about 6lbs and gritty. Clean up the trigger and you'd have a very nice little shooter.
BTW: the trigger internals are different than the FS M&P22

Shot mine for the first time today. Compared to my M&P22, I think the sights on the Compact have a better post/notch picture (deeper and wider) and the thumb safety has a more positive feel to it. The trigger on the Compact is slightly heavier and more gritty but I supposed that will smooth out a bit with shooting. I cleaned/lubed it and shot about 150 rounds mixed of TAC22, CCI SV, Federal 750 and CCI Blazer and only had one failure to extract an empty CCI SV case. Overall glad I purchased it.

The two things I was really hoping for was interchangeable backstraps and being striker fired. Seems like it has neither.

I think this is gonna be a winner for Smith. If it turns out to be reliable with lots of different brands of ammo, the Ruger SR22 now has some serious competition.

I'm still waiting to be able to get both M&P 22 pistols apart for comparison. Like I stated earlier,I won't be able to for a week or 2. But I did notice the thumb safety is way better than the original. A very distinct click. Also the barrel looks alot thicker than the original and it is threaded. The grip is about as narrow as the shied. I'm sure someone who has one here can do a side by side before I get one done.

Greetings,

First post and I was looking for some information on this little guy. I just bought one and the problem I am running into so far is:

1. The only reason I bought this was to suppress it. Now... I can't find an adapter for it. The original M&P 22, if I am right, was farmed out to Walther... and the wonderful metric system. The M&P 22C is American made... and SAE. I need a 3/8x24 to 1/2x28 M&P22 Compact barrel adapter. Everyone sells the Walther P22 Threaded M8 x .75 to 1/2-28 which fits the original M&P22 due to the Walther barrel.

If you can help me get the right one, I'd be very grateful. Regardless... calling Smith tomorrow.

2. The free box of ammo. Order online and the wait is 6-8 weeks... FYI

3. Way to many safety devices on this gun. I believe in my finger being the safety... However I have read that on the old model the thumb safety was removable and S&W would send you a plug.

4. Childproof internal lock... I hate those.

5. Magazine inserted to fire a chambered round... blah blah

6. Magazine availability and a whole new magazine. Should have learned a lesson from the old Sig P250 change over. That won't settle well with folks.

That is the bad so far for me... YMMV

The good is that this will look totally mall ninja tacticool when I actually get it suppressed. Much better than my Mark 3... but... I need the adapter.

Can anyone assist? Thanks for having me.

If I remember correctly, I think advantage arms uses the 3/8x24 to 1/2x28 on their conversion threaded barrels.

Advantage Arms Secure Online Store: Threaded Barrel Adapter

Doesn't specify on the web site, ,but I remember reading somewhere that what it is. Guess it wouldn't hurt to give 'em a jingle.

Greetings,

Thanks for the reply. I saw that one and the size is right, but it looks like it is for a barrel that protrudes outside of the slide. The M&P 22C is actually threaded inside of the slide. Can't hurt to ask though. Thanks again.

Greetings,

Just talked to Smith this morning. No adapters and really not a lot of knowledge on the new pistol they admit.

I talked to a guy who makes adapters and he has received quite a few inquiries and will be making them. I'll post his details when he has them available.

Can't reach anyone at S&W Specialty Services.

S&W really should have been ready for this though. But we are still cool.

Please, let me know if anyone finds one elsewhere. Thanks.
