I travel all over the US for business, and I visit every gun shop I can find just for fun. Friday, on my way home, I found a Model 41 that was converted to short. Not a 41-1, the serial is way too high at A600xxx, just a converted gun. Nice shape, 7-3/8", with muzzle brake, no box, one magazine. A lightly used gun in excellent condition. I left a deposit, ran to the airport, and flew home to do some research since I was out of time. Monday, I can finish the purchase if this is a worthwhile buy.
The price is $1,100 - at the high range of used Model 41s I have seen in the US this year, but based on info I gathered here, apparently a fair price in the US.
Many, many internet searches, and reading most of the Model 41 posts here have been unrevealing about the desirability of a converted 41. I have no idea if this would be money well spent.
Usually the internet reveals all, or at least points me in a direction. Perhaps too few of the conversions exist in the wild. My copy of the SCSW doesn't have much info.
In any case, I came here in search of an opinion before I say goodbye to a grand. I'm picky about what I buy, items have to be a little unusual and of increasing value, and something I can basically keep forever.
I apologize if this is a basic question, and I did read the posts here (very helpful - that let me know market value was about what was asked), but if anyone has an opinion about a converted 41, I'd like to know. There really isn't too much out there about converted guns.
Is it an automatic buy if you see one in the wild? Are there specific things/failures/weak spots to look for in these that make them undesirable, perhaps with the aluminum slide? Is it a gun to use, or one to put away for the kids someday? I have my Colt Match Targets that are safely stored, never used family heirlooms, and this is one I'd like to use.
