The 'unofficial' 58 Club

No new members in almost 3 months?

So, I lettered my early 58 because it came with TH, TT, and TS. I thought it was a put together job, but it clearly came from the factory outfitted as is.
The red ramp front is painted on.

"Shipped August 21, 1968 to National Sporting Goods Co, Baltimore, MD. The records indicate that the revolver was shipped with a 4 inch barrel, blue finish, target hammer, target trigger, and checkered target grips."

That is an outstanding find Mike. I have long wanted to see if one of the 'early' ones would letter with coke, TT, TH.......wanna trade? :D

Thanks for sharing.

Scott, would the letter actually say "Cokes"? Mine didn't. Now you have me thinking.

Mike,

You may have a point. I think that Roy refers to them as "Walnut Targets". The era that they shipped would dictate if they were Cokes or another variety of target stocks.

I would imagine that Cokes ended near the first year (or maybe a bit before?) the very first model 58's shipped. Maybe this is a question better asked to the stock experts....Maybe 410bore?

It does seem a little late for Cokes now that I think about it, we'll see, sent a PM to Kris.

I think they could be correct but guns that shipped with cokes as standard letter as "checkered Goncalo alves target grips."

Thanks Kris. My letter states "checkered target grips". I also sent Roy a few photo's, so he knows that Cokes were on the gun. Like so many other things with S&W we'll never really know.
The condition of the grips seems to match the condition of the gun.

A Mod. 58 just surfaced on a local sales network this morning. the owner is asking $750. It does not have the original service grips, but comes with target grips and has "SAPD" stamped on the left side of the frame, under the cylinder. No box or papers, just the revolver.

It looks to be in 94%+/- condition. Is is worth $750?

Yes indeed......If you don't want it. PM me the owner's name and number and it can come back home :)

To me it would be for sure.

Model 58 all ready for deer season

I will be toting the 58 along with my Marlin (also in 41 Mag)...along with some of the other items in my ditty bag.

Anyone else take their 58 as back-up? or for hogs, or yotes, trespassers ect?

None of the whitetails around here have gotten nearly close enough for a certain clean kill with the 58, but I keep hoping ;)

Yes, when hiking in the woods, I always carry my Model 58. Besides the black bears we occasionally see on our outings, we're overrun with coyotes around here.

Bob,

I have know about the 1894FG (I own one of these), the octagon barrel version (never seen one in person), 1894S (seen one or two, but usually priced into the stratosphere).....But I have never seen one in STAINLESS  Is that a 41 Mag? It looks like a 45/70 guide gun (I would like to try one out, but I am not set up to reload that...yet).

Tell me, did Marlin make a SS 41 mag lever gun?

...oh, and we all need to help Ladder13 find a 41Mag Marlin in some flavor....maybe help feed his addiction? :)

Yes, Marlin did make one run of stainless .41s with a laminated stock and 16.5" barrel. Nice "little" gun but quite honestly it doesn't have the balance that the longer barreled guns have. It is quite "handy" however.

Marlin made only 151 of them vs. 250 of the .44 Magnum, .357 Magnum and .45 Colt. It was the first of the series to be made and if you bought the .41 it entitled you to buy the same serial number gun for the rest of the series.

I think at the time the wholesale was $650.00. I had two but sold one. A friend of mine still has his two .41s. I convinced my neighbor who likes .357s to buy one also and as was indicated above the selling price for these guns are now in the $2K range...

Bob

ps...there are several Marlin .41s for sale over on GunBroker now... Put Marlin .41 and Marlin 41 in the search box and they come right up... Most are selling in the $1050-1500 range. A nicely stocked FG did just sell for $2725(!!!!!!) however...that is just insane.
