The 'unofficial' 58 Club

...and what are your plans for it...shooter, carry, hunting???

Is this your first .41?

Glad you finally made it....Bob

Yes this is my first .41 Magnum. It will be a shooter and carried Outdoors. Have the re-do my recent HR 218 qualification to CCW with it.

I carry my 58 back up hunting with my Marlin .41 also. Every time a deer comes within 25 yds however a rifle is already in hand. I do have a Ranch Dog mold made specifically for the Marlin. RF-411-255-TL, its a Lee 6 banger, non gas checked and tumble lube design. Bullets weigh right at 269gr when cast with straight clip on wheel weights.

Here's my Model 58s, one is in mint condition early manufacture while the other with combat grips had been my EDC for many years. Started with one then ended up with 2 Mod 58s and a Model 57! I have never had a gun whether revolver or semi automatic that is as accurate as these are! What an underated caliber! Only wish I could find a reasonably priced Marlin to go along with them! Even a Timberwolf pump would be great! The .41, what an addiction!

Killing my finger!

Hey, Fellas!
I shot my 4" Model 58, today! 75° and bright sun, great fun, except----? I was shooting both 7 grains of UV Clays and 9 grains of Herco with a 220 gr. RCBS home cast bullet. Both proven to be accurate in several .41 Mags! I wear an old pair of horse hide work gloves, like I always do when I shoot, and the gun was about to ruin my middle finger on my right hand! The gun wears Shooting Stars which I have on several gun and like a lot! But now I'm beginning to wonder if I need to change? Any ideas?

That is odd.... I think I have the same set of grips and with light loads the gun doesn't even move in my hand... Are you shooting DA or SA? How hard a grip are you using?

You may want to try a set of the Hogue rubber with the fingergroove or Pachmayer Presentation...and try without the gloves...maybe it is slipping on the leather.

Sixgun...for carry ammo you might try any of the loads from Federal, CorBon or Barnes that use the Barnes 180 grain all copper HP...they run in the mid-1300s and don't recoil as badly as the 210s. They also open right up...

...addicting aren't they.... :-)

No clue why but I also find that the .41 is the most accurate caliber going...

Thank you Bob! I have a pair of Hogues with the finger grooves but I hate rubber on my nice Smith's! I'll have to try them. I had this same problem with a Ruger Redhawk in . 44 Mag and cured it with wood Hogues. May have to do that later. Thanks again. Dick

Hi, Dick. I wear a pair of Mechanix M-Pact gloves (not the M-Pact 2 or 3) when I shoot magnum handguns these days. They're thin enough to easily manipulate any handgun controls, but have padding in all the right places. You might want to try a pair for yourself. I cut the index fingertips off mine, but this isn't really necessary.

I think a set of Hogue Monogrips in your favorite wood might help, also. I used to have Hogue rubber grips on my Model 58, but, like you, couldn't stand the look of them though they were comfortable enough. Now it wears a Hogue Monogrip in tulipwood.

Was just over on GunBroker...there is a distributor there selling the .41 Magnum ammo from C.O.P. (Copper Only Projectiles) for only $150.00 a CASE of 250 rounds. Midaway wants $190.00.

I have two boxes that I haven't had time to try yet. Velocity is supposed to be 1365 fps but didn't say what length barrel...

That is a lot cheaper than Remington 210s at $50-75.00 a box of 50...

Anyone looking for a nice what apprears to be "S" prefix 58...Gun International has one for $750 and it looks pretty nice...#100492766

Steve,
I put Hogue Monos on my Redhawk .44 Mag just recently for that very reason, and it fixed that problem! I doubt that I'll do that on my 58, though. That style, to me, just doesn't look right on an N frame. I don't like the long hangy-down part. I've worn plain old horsehide work gloves to shoot for years. I have a pair of padded winter Railroad switchman's gloves that a friend gave me but they're too bulky. I may have to try a pair of those M-Pacts. Thanks for the tip!
Dick
PS - Come to think of it, I think I have a pair that I used on a Mod 29 for a while. Have to see if I can locate them. I may have sold them with the gun?

YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Glad one of US got it!!!

Better pics please when you get it...that was well under what they have been selling for.

Bob

You are right, it was a good price, even with the$40 shipping. Finding S prefixed serial numbered guns is getting tougher and tougher to find. This will go well with my S 57. I will post pictures once it lands.

Thanks again for the tip on this one.

Steve,
That's a very pretty rig! I don't think I've ever seen the tulip Hogues. Those, and the fresh leather holster really go well with the dark blue gun! Very nice!

U R welcome...

...is your 57 a 4"??

I am betting that the grips on that new 58 will match the gun...even with the crapy pics the seller posted it looked in very nice condition. If he had taken good pics and posted it over on GunBroker it would have made $900 easy.

Bob

Yes, my 57 is a 4" gun. I bought it without grips which ironically is what I was looking for simply because I had a set of "cokes" in the parts box just waiting for an "S" gun. Those are with Paul right now getting cleaned up and ready to slide on the 57. Magna's and my hands do not do well together so I may have a set of custom grips done for the 58 that have a carving on the right panel, ala Elmer Keith, to keep the gun in place when I shoot it. Keeping it to 41 Special style loads will help as well.:) I have lots of other 41s I can push harder. I know it is sacrilege but the 58 may get a rebored 28 barrel in 41 to make a H/D style "duty" gun versus the M&P heavy barrel style that it was originally brought out in. If I do, the factory barrel with stay in the box so someone could swap it back on someday if none of my kids want it when I am gone.

I already have a model 28 barrel rebored to .41, I just need to find a donor beater (cheap) 58.

Like minds I would say. My 28 barrel is at Clearwater reboring right now. While this doesn't look like a beater 58, it is about as low cost of one as I have seen lately thus the snagging of it.
