Location
Texas Gulf Coast...
Hunting member on the lease just north of mine has been asking me
for months to find him a 4' 29-s in nickel at a reasonable price (under$900.00).
I advise him to be patient and something will show.

I spot the one listed below. Looks ok, so I pop the "Buy it now".
Call the member. His response...." I found one at a gunshow this
weekend."
I ask what he paid...."950.00"
I should have known better.

Anyway, looks like I own a nickel 29-2.

That's a good lesson to learn- you don't want to be on the hook for some one else satisfaction with a thousand dollar gun.

Even though you ended up with an unintended purchase, some poetic justice did occur.

The member that wanted one at a "reasonable" price got one that's far from that, but you did pretty good!! Slap some really fancy grips on it and scoot on over to a BBQ.

Heck... if it wasn't for me being in CA where it's an impossibility to do so, I'd offer to buy it.

Wow! That's a nice looking revolver, sir.

Yep, understand. I do believe that I must be on 'speed dial' for about a dozen or so guys that know I dabble in guns. Can't count all the times I've gotten the 'Hey, can you find me a XXX gun? - Got $$ in hand, gotta find one.'
So, yep, I usually can find such an item, or very similar. A follow-up call usually finds that they have moved on to a more desired treasure and/or have no money available.
Unless they're really serious, I've about stopped looking for anyone.

I refuse......

I refuse to feel sorry for you paying a good price for such a fine 29. That is bee-yoo-tiful.

Seems like this year especially helping people out has blown up in my face more than once. I helped my MIL buy a computer, ended up spending my own money and set it up for her and I'm sure her family has commandeered it. I also helped a disabled friend get a computer shipped to his home and when it arrived it didn't work and he's incapable of dealing with it on his own. Fortunately with a lot of phone calls and a little help from friends in his location and some luck (it's a long story) he got it shipped off and we are expecting him to get one back. I keep saying I'm going to stop doing this.

Is it nickel or chrome? The GB add said chrome.

By the way nice job either way.

I recently had some friends, a couple, that wanted their first home defense gun. The wife said find one that she could shoot and buy it and she would write me a check. So after a search for a week or so on a local forum I found one and started lining up a purchase. When I told her the price she said "we didn't want to spend that much". It was $400. So, I stopped looking.

Yeah, newbie gun buyers have a hard time with prices. I still remember the first pocket pistol we purchased, a (cough, cough) Kel-Tec P-3AT. They are pretty cheap and I figured it was "good enough". :o

After about a year of experience I had a chance to shoot a friend's 1911 and eventually found a nice, used Kimber Stainless Target II for $600 as result. That was just the first one . . .

If you had told me up front that we would end up with the several rather nice pistols we currently own, I would have laughed. It takes time to grow on you.

One of my next door neighbors expressed an interest in buying an "all steel, home defense handgun". I presented several options that I noticed on ArizonaShooting-dot-com, our local gun board. They were all excellent bargains and matched what he expressed an interest in. Nothing ever happened. I suspect he was in the same price range that I started in so long ago. ;)

I like revolvers....

I have revolvers, I trust revolvers and I like shooting revolvers. I never had a liking for semi autos but they are getting to be better value in the SD and HD department. Everybody doesn't have $600-$800 for a revolver. I want a model 60 or similar. The prices have put me off. To get adequate guns for home and carry I'm looking at semi autos.

Looks like a good one. I can see the pin so I assume P&R(?) Four inch barrel to boot!

Still, you really did not want it for yourself but now you have it. I had a similar experience (not buying a gun, it was something else) so now I would not buy anything just on someone's word. They are suddenly going to need the money for something else and tell you how truly sorry they are, and leave you holding the bag. :(

So my rules are:

  • Never loan tools
  • Never loan guns
  • Never buy for someone else w/o the cash in hand
