Have to remember zombies get meaner and worse looking as they get older, kind of like the rest of us. I would put a knife on a spear, bet that zombie blood would smell some kind of awful after exposure to the sun etc.

Times were different back in 1968,people had more sheltered lives. Thus a film about cannibal corpses was shocking. It had not been seen before.

The Italians and Spaniards made a bunch of crappy zombie movies between 1968 and the mid 80s. Zombies fought sharks, radioactive zombies over ran Spain, lots of fun stuff.

In the 1968 film, there are hints that mystery radiation from a Venus probe raised the dead. Not bad pseudo science. I suppose in theory some unknown electromagnetic phenomena could reactivate a human brain, stirring the primal core to be a sort of battery. To destroy the device, you destroy the power source.

The idea of a virus is a somewhat recent one. In actuality a fungus or prion disease are just as likely.

The term zombie has come to refer to diseased humans of a senses impaired and violent nature and not just the idea of a revived corpse of some such. Such diseased humans would possibly have increased resistance to pain.

But most people writing on the subjects do not understand the damage that gunfire, particularly rifle bullets, do to human bodies. For a diseased human poison gas, central nervous system hits, or cumulative blood loss and even exposure would prove just as effective.

Man, tell ya what.
One thing that would be GREAT for ME if I turned zombie:

Finally, I could eat all the red meat I wanted and the resultant gout-ridden, uber-swollen appendages wouldn't faze me INNN THUUUH LEAST!

And a plus for all the still breathin'?
I'd be slowed down so much from it that you could bust my head open with a plastic spoon.

OK. Let me try to explain this. A head shot will destroy the nanotubular network in the brain. The cerebellum and brainstem stop functioning and the undead become "re-dead". The viral particles may remain viable for weeks in the corpse but it cannot reanimate the corpse.

Tanks for this--I did think of the Brain Stem thing but--some fo those "dead" they come across-have to have been "dead" for more than several weeks--like thosewho were in that food celler-and those stuck in the flooded part.

I really resent all the disparaging remarks made about Zombies. Just because the federal government has yet to declare Zombies a protected minority group is no reason for all the discrimination I see in movies and on TV and on the Internet.

Zombies have feelings too. So no more of this talk about going out Zombie Knocking, or Zombie Hunting, or Zombie Killing. Let's show a little respect here folks!

I mean it could be your sister or daughter that marries a Zombie and then how will you feel?

But do they really feel and have feelings with Brain Stem function???

Head shot, for sure. And don't even think about stabbing them.
You get that gooey discharge stuff all over you.
It's all most like zapping Kleons. If you have your phaser turned up too high, you get that nasty Kleons stuff all over you.

That brings up anothe question. Some of them in episodes of The Walking dead--smeared Zombie blood, guts and rot--ll over themselves--yet they dont get infected. BUT--barlye get a scratch--or something minor--turn into a Zombie. Remember the episode where they were in the prison and some has somekind of a caugh--and later became zombies. I dont recall any of them being bitten, scratched or breathed on.

In early folklore and movies, Zombies were re-animated corpses, usually through VooDoo or witchcraft, which were slaves to their Master. They did what they were told even if that was murder.
As in the case of your 1950s movie, the Zombie's task apparently was to guard the diamonds which were stolen. As such, they went to get them back. Once the diamonds were retrieved, their task was done. So they went back to where they came from.

George Romero's 1968 classic Night of the Living Dead forever changed the role of Zombies in movies. Here the zombies are re-animated by other means and are independent creatures driven by the most basic of instincts, the need to eat.
Both Hollywood and the audiences found murderous, flesh eating zombies much scarier than simple dead slaves. So they ran with it and thus the creatures evolved into what we know as Zombies today.

Romeros movie reminds me of one with peter Cushing-who had reanimated long dead German Soldiers. Only--these soldiers I THINK ""lived"" in a long since--dirty swimming pool.

The Russo films are the only ones I know of where the zombies specifly want to eat human brains. (I liked those movies btw) In other movies they will eat the whole body. I think that's pretty much true with most of the current film versions of zombies such as The Walking Dead.
But it is really cool to have them stumbling around muttering BRAAAIIIINS! and it has caught on in pop culture. :D

In the current versions, zombies are created when the virus reactivates the most primal portions of the brain. While the body is dead, it is re-animated by nerve impulses from this infected brain. They can't think or reason, they act only on the most basic instincts.
BTW: Zombies don't actually need to eat. They're dead and don't need the nurishment. Actually since the body is dead, it can't digest what they eat either. They eat only because its an ingrained instinct.
Zombies also don't feel pain. Bullets, knives, clubs, etc only have the effect of damaging already dead tissue. While it may slow them down or even cripple them, the zombies pay no attention to the damage and keep right on coming.
So they only way to "kill" a zombie, if kill is even the right word, is to destroy the infected brain.

Yeah, I know, I'm a bit of a sci-fi/horror geek. What can I say? I grew up on this stuff. ;)

For those who may have interest in Zombies, I highly recommend Max Brooks' books "The Zombie Survival Guide" and "World War Z". Both are very entertaining reads. ;)

Well said.Another question, since a fewof the Walkers had no stomachs--or that I could see?--how then--even with minimal stem function--can they possibly "feel" hungry? Brain stemsI would imagine--dont have the ability to have so many functions?

I strongly recommend the book World War Z. Frankly, I thought it would be idiotic, but it was actually quite good. Rather than being some stupid, blood and gore zombie book, it is really about modern society, our values and how we would survive and re-build in the face of a global catastrophe. It was written by the son of Mel Brooks and Anne Bancroft.

I read a story that they were sort of embarrassed that their son was writing zombie books until he brought home the check when he sold the movie rights and showed it to them. Mel Brooks said "I LOVE ZOMBIES!"

Ive heard f that book--and think ill slide by Barnes and Nobles to see if they have a copy? The Walking Dead--is my 1st watching experiance with--Zombies--soim not well schooled on the half-dead.

Did anyone else get the feeling that Ringo got out of bed on the wrong side yesterday?

Lighten up, Ringo, this whole zombie thing is silly but can be fun. I just hope you've got your Zombiemax ammo ready! :D

Thats partly true. At 9:30 AM--I had a"friendly" visit with two home inspectors. One was nice--the other was a little Hitler wannabe. I got along with the nice Lady--I tried ignoring the other. BTW--I was a bit peeved beause--I had spotless floors--and they came in wiht wetand sightly muddy shoes. I had asked them to either take shoes off or wipe them with the large towel I had on the floor for that purpose. After they left--I spent about 20 minutes cleaning up a mess that should have not happened.

They did the smearing several times throughout the seasons. It's on the clothing and body not in the bloodstream

Actually, Carol? smearedit on her face too--in the episode where Rick and the rest were rescued. Remember when she carried a rifle--snuck up on Terminus--and shot the gas tank then exploded it with a bottlerocket. She smeared it on her bare skin. Also--the gal in love with the Korean guy--put her hand in some in an eisode before she made it to Terminus--and Rick--did the same thing--after Terminus fell--used smeare blood to wipe-out the Terminus sign.

Michone did it twice as well. And i remember there was another instance.

Id forgot she did it too. Also, I think way back in season 1or 2? Rick and the Korean guy also hadit on their skin. Also, from various episodes--blood-spatter on them after killing zombies.

Im still waiting for the infected birds to start attacking........

Rick was the first in episode 2, I think. When they were getting out of Atlanta. Then Michone when she first met the group but that was by accident. She gutted a zombie who was standing over her. She did it again when by herself after the prison fire. Carol did it in Terminus. Does Michone dragging around zombie slaves count? She did that twice.

Now you're getting your movies crossed. The birds are only in Resident Evil, I forget which one. And 28 days later
