Most Overrated OR Underrated Hand Gun, In Your Opinion?

Overrated: The Desert Eagle, in any caliber.

Underrated: Ruger SP101 (especially the .327 magnum version)

Over-rated is the 1911 platform... I have a really nice Springer and I like it a lot. I've shot a number of really expensive customs too... but none are Nirvana and due all the hype.

Under-rated in my opinion is the Beretta PX4. It's one of my least expensive guns but has captured my heart as a natural shooter (for me). I'm surprise that the PX4 doesn't get a lot more love.

Overrated: HKs - horrible triggers & Kimbers
Had both, sold both.

Underrated: Marlin 795 22lr - most accurate "out of the box" .22 rifle in my opinion.

Over rated: I gotta agree, glocks (even though I love them tools)

Why? They're great, but gosh there are other choices

Underrated: cz 75 (even though I sold mine for a glock... What?!)

Why? So comfortable, and soft shooting, and accurate

Caliber:

Over: 40 S&W
Too poppy, but I still like it

Under: 10mm
Awesome round, wish I had more firearm choices...

Overrated: Pimped out 1911's. Professional pistols used by amateurs.

Underrated: Glocks. Amateur pistols used by MANY professionals.

I don't have a full 2 cents worth because I am new to the gun game and only owned 2 guns. But I have heard enough and experenced a little to feel that the J frames are under rated. One because of their size and two they are only 5 rounds.

To me if you think any situation will require more than 5 rounds, you better call the cops and pray, hard.

Lots of good stuff in here. But hers my take on it.
Overrated=The gun your currently drooling over due to the lavished write ups in various hon rags and on "Gun TV".
Underrated=The one currently on your hip, that has faithfully worked for the last X-amount of years.

Wow, so many Glock haters. Glock makes a fine weapon. I own one. I have shot it for years without one single failure. When I take self defense training it is the pistol I use. It is in the same class as Smith and Wesson M&P and Springfield XD. Affordable and reliable. If it is over rated, it's no by me.

Over Rated: Kimber. I have seen too many Kimbers fail to fire.
Under Rated: Hi-Point. An affordable way to exercise your 2nd amendment rights.

I don't read gun rags, and haven't for years, now.

I realized that long ago all they were trying to do is sell me something. If they want to sell be something, then don't charge me for the gun rag. It should be free, after all, it's a shiny advertisement, and nothing else.

My most basic rule is that one should not believe everything written, as it has the writers idea of what is true and correct. Not necessarily my idea. I'm old enough and smart enough to make up my own mine. This is most prevalent with the gun rags.....

I loves my glocks, loves my glocks...

However some glockers are in fact in denial about the other great guns out there.

Underrated: Steyr M, S, L series of hand guns. Had both the M & S in .40 for T&E. Loved them more than, dare I say it under the threat of treasonous heresy-----GLOCK! Easier to control, very ergonomic & accurate. Solid feeling too. Agency didn't approve due to lack of armorer training @ that time. Nice guns nonetheless.

Over rated - Glocks.. People worship these weapons and they are no better then any others..
Under rated - Ruger P series.. I've owned a P90 and still own a P97dc.. Talk about a weapon going bang everytime.. It's hard to beat this weapon for the money..

I agree about the Ruger P series of pistols. Many years ago I just wanted a 45acp semi auto, and the Ruger P97dc sitting in the dealer's case was the least expensive by at least $200 at the time. Not knowing anything about Ruger I was suspicious, but this gun has NEVER failed to function as designed with every brand of ammo that I have ever put into it, including some of the **** from Russia. Since then I have added many Ruger semi's to my safe, and have had good luck with every one of them. All of my revolvers are S&W, most of my semi auto's are Ruger. I won't comment about Glocks except to say that people I have met who own no guns, and know nothing about guns, use "Glock" as almost a generic term for all semi automatic pistols. Glocks just don't fit my hand very well, except possibly the single stack 36, but right now I have no need for a low capacity 45.

Most overrated: a tie - high capacity pistols touted for their high capacity as civilian self defence weapons and j frame 357 magnum revolvers.

Most underrated: pistols without rails.

Overrated: Colt Diamondback. A gussied-up Detective Special that wouldn't sell in the 70s, now with $1,400-1,500 asking prices. Ridiculous.

This is in fact a very true statement, and I'm a huge Colt lover.

I find it hard to swallow anyone who says the 1911 in general is overrated. The 1911 is one of the most innovative, revolutionary designs in history. Now if you want to pick a specific brand, well that's another story.

Overrated? Wilson Combat. High priced and very pretty 1911 that doesn't shoot any better than any other well tuned 1911.
