Just a simple question about .22 mag ammo... Why is there a shortage of it? Have people just started hoarding all .22 ammo, not knowing that .22 WMR and .22 LR are not compatible. I keep seeing more people referencing the prices and lack of 22 mag ammo and don't get that one. The only large capacity semi-auto I know of chambered in .22 mag is the Kel-Tec PMR 30... Essentially no large capacity semi-auto rifles exist. I rarely shoot my CZ 452 .22wmr and don't know many people that shoot a lot of .22 mag. Other reason are the Ruger .22 snubs I guess. Maybe I answered my own question... Other ideas? Manufacturers trying to catch up on everything else, and have ignored .22 mag production. I'm bored at work.

I have a Ruger Single Six, with both cylinders (.22lr & .22wmr).

I avoid buying wmr "just because it's there", but I did pick up a couple of the CCI 200 round boxes, and have passed up many since. I use it at the range when I can't get .22lr.

The .22 of either sort is easier on my arthritis. But at ~.20 per round, from a cost basis, I could shoot 9 at not much more, if I'm having a good day.

I have seen people looking for it, and from comments, they had wmr only firearms. I did trade a box of 50 for two boxes of mini mags. I was uncomfortable (felt like I got too good a deal), but the guy was more than happy. Looking back, the costs were about the same.

But at ~.20 per round

I would fall all over myself to buy .22 Magnum at .20 per round!

Locally and on the online sites, .28 to .30 per round is a good buy as far as I'm concerned. Even with shipping extra.

My opinion is there's just less demand for .22 Magnum overall, and if manufacturers are putting their production efforts where the demand is, then they're gonna be making all the .22LR they can.

Still, .22 Magnum is not hard to find; it's just costing, as usual, about three times more than .22LR.

My favorite "walking in Penn's woods" gun is my CZ 452FS........given that .22mag is a mid size varmint hunting round a small stash can last a long time.

When it shows up at the LGS it's ranging from $15-17/50.....30-34 cents per round.

Been seeing a lot more .17hmr over the last 14 months at about the same price.

Good .223 hunting ammo is available at Walmart for $20-23/20 ....... a buck a round.

If I see it (wmr) in 50 round boxes, it is usually $14-16. But Academy has it (rarely) at about $41 for 200. Same thing at GM is near $60. I picked up 2 boxes of the 200 over a couple of months. I think I've fired maybe 24 rounds. I guess I bought it more because it was there, and I hadn't seen any reasonably-priced .22 in months. If I'm going to pay $10+ for 50 rounds, might as well get the wmr.

Yeah that's basically what I've seen supply and price wise. I didn't know they had a 200 round box available. I see 50-rd boxes priced at $16-18 lately, and last time I was a buyer I paid $10-11. So like everything I had sticker shock and wondered why the sharp increase for a round that most don't shoot a lot of. Gotta love my CZ 452, but I agree that .22 WMR is kinda a pricey (in between) round. When compared to .22lr it's pricey and not much better performance but cheap against .223. It still fills a hole for me and makes a good varmint gun. I've seen a lot more .17 hmr available but don't have one. Thanks for your opinions, sounds like the same conclusion for everyone.

I have a model s&W 48 and a Henry in .22 mag, and I suspect there are far more rifles than .22 mag handguns since the have been around for years.

With the huge shortage of.22lR I guess the factory's don't want to interrupt .22lr production for the .22 mag .

Kygunco has had some at a good price a couple of times in the last two months. I get their emails and it is usually right on the front of their eflyer.

While passing time in a local sporting goods store before going to a doctor appointment today saw approximately two dozen boxes of 200 round .22 magnum for just over $62 each. Was briefly tempted but left it all on the shelf. Was not able to justify it when I could have purchased 200 rounds of Lawman 115 grain 9mm for less than $52.

Its just another face in the multi faceted ammo shortage paradigm.....

It's either not being produced in favor of other products.

It's being bought up for resale on websites and at gunshows, with huge markups, due to the "perceived" shortages.

It's being bought up for hoarding by individuals who already have enough ammo to make the floorboards in their homes sag 2", who cannot walk by a box in a display case without buying all of it, yet complain about availability, while holding more ammo inventory than many PD's and National Guard Armories......

Some fellas should really start thinking about where the ammo is really going, because its not all going to DHS, or any other Government entity.....

When I bought my PMR-30 I stocked up on 30rd mags (15) before Colorado banned Hi-capacity mags.It was nothing to shoot all 450 rds in one sitting. When prices started rising I found it more prudent to look for a firearm that took longer to go through that many rounds.

I still shoot the PMR-30 but have since added a model 48,a Henry 22 mag and a Heritage 22lr/22 mag.It also never hurts to take one of my 45's,38's,9mm's or 357's along to balance things out.

200 round box is CCI Choot Em! labeling.
40 gr JHP
#0958

I've seen it twice at Academy, once at Bass Pro.

That's me, except for the part about complaining.:D I don't have to complain about availability, cause I have a bunch of it. I don't intend to run out, so I still buy a little along. Will continue to do so. As they say, " 'Murica"

This reminds me of the classic line from a Pogo cartoon . "We have met the enemy and they are us!"

I've been shooting a left handed Savage in 22 mag since shortly after they were introduced. Couple years ago I noticed no 22 mag on the shelves but stacks of 17 mag. So I bought a matching Savage rifle in 17 mag and set it up with an identical scope. I save my 22 mag for large varmints and use the 17 for practice and small stuff. I can see no logical reason that 17 mag would be available by the brick and 22 mag scarce.

You could get a left handed model?!?!?:(

The .17 was gone for a year at my stores. Now I see it constantly in quantity at Cabela's, some at Academy. At WM it depends on the store.

22MAG AMMO

When I found this a few years back I was headed to a gun show. As was ny habit, I picked up a couple cases while I was at the show-- I just have all I need. The Mag cylinder for a little colt I have has never been used. These recent crazy prices do not faze me in the slightest- :)
