My first revolver was a 4&5/8" Blackhawk in 357 Magnum bought new in 1971. I sold or traded it somewhere along the line. Should have kept it.

Later I bought a 45 Colt BH with a 7.5" barrel. Had it cut to 4&5/8" then sold or traded it. Should have kept that one, too.

Acquired a 30 Carbine BH. Sold it. Bought another just like it. It was also gone within a few months. This is the definition of young and stupid, by the way. About 6 months ago I was feeling nostalgic and bought another 3 Screw 30 carbine BH. Will try to hang onto this one. All the BHs mentioned were Old Models. Wanted an Old Model with a short barrel in 41 Magnum but never found one.

About 25 years ago I bought the first of many Ruger 22 "Standard Model" auto pistols. Gave it away. Bought another. Gave it away, too. Picked up a third one. Yup, gave it away. Funny thing is I paid the exact same price for all of them. I always paid $100 for a Ruger 22.

In 1999 I was at a show in Salt Lake City and a guy was walking around with two Ruger 22 autos in holsters. He was stopped several times and he showed them to folks with no buyers. After about 20 minutes I asked to see them.

One was a 4.5" Standard Model and the other was a Mark I Target Model with a 6 &7/8" barrel. He wanted $100 (of course) and $125 respectively. I bought the short one at his asking price (naturally, this is what I was used to paying). After walking behind him for another 10 minutes I tapped him on the shoulder and asked if he'd take $100 for the other one, giving me $25 off as I had purchased the other at his asking price. Another $100 Ruger was mine. (What is that, five?) The Standard Model turned out to have been made in 1955, the year I was born. The Mark I dates from 1966, the year my wife was born. I'll keep these.

At some point I bought a Ruger 77 in 338 Winchester Magnum. Don't ask me why. Traded it having never fired it for a 6" Python. Still have the Colt. I think I came out ahead monetarily on that swap. Bought a 77 "International" in 308. Cool rifle. Sold it to a buddy. Picked up a stainless Mini 14. It was one of the recalled models and the dealer took it back as it was unfired and I didn't replace it.

Around 1989 I got a 10/22 from Walmart for $119. The basic model it looks the same today as the day I bought it. No "space guns" for me, thank you.

After Bill Ruger Sr. sold us out in 1994 on the Assault Weapon Ban I boycotted Ruger products for a long time. After his death I sort of relented. I got a #1 in 243 Winchester. I love the look of the #1 and after owning one I love the way they handle and shoot. I kind of went overboard with the #1 thing.

Most recently I bagged another 10/22. I had yearned (yes, I said I yearned) for a 10/22 with the Mannlicher stock for years. At a recent local show a storefront dealer was set up and he offered 20% off retail for all sales at the show that day. No excuses at that point. He had one, and that discount made the price right. He even paid the sales tax. Yee Haw!

Since the photo was taken I ditched the complicated scope covers.

I hope I haven't forgotten anything. (EDIT) Oh, I just remembered. I had a 44 Magnum auto carbine at one point. I liked it except for the skimpy four round magazine capacity. Sold it. (30) Never had a Ruger DA revolver or a center firer auto pistol as I find all of them exceedingly ugly. But I have a fairly long and interesting history with Ruger firearms. No plans to add any more at this point. But you never really know on such things.

Nice essay, Saxon. Ruger guns are the ones that I bought the most of (and sold off) over the years. Never had any rifles or Blackhawks, but I wish I never got rid of my Mark II Target and my P-95 back in '03, when I liquidated my guns off because I was a) younger and stupid and, b) just over guns at that point and lost complete interest. Since my interest in guns resurrected late last year, I acquired my dad's Ruger Standard, a 3" GP100 in .38, and just a couple days ago picked up a DAO SP101 in .38/.357 for my wife.

I would love to get Smiths, but the prices most are commanding these days are out of my price range.

Bought a used 10/22 in 1976. Still have it, it will be here until I'm gone.
Bought a 6" Security Six in 1978, first center fire handgun I bought. Still have it. Thought about selling it more than once, even took it to the LGS. The owner who had more sense than indie, talked me I to keeping it. I'm glad I at least had the sense to listen!

There is a used Single Six in the safe that dates from 1964 that I bought at a country yard sale, an SP101 .22, an SP101 DAO .357, a .22 long barrel hunter model 3, and a really sweet Lipsey's Blackhawk Bisley in .44 Special.

I don't consider myself a Ruger guy, but when I count them up, I might have to re think my thinking!

Had a Super Blackhawk, a single six and an ultralight 243 back in the day,got a wild hair for a motorsickle and the better half decided those guns need to go if you're getting that! So they did....
The last few years I've picked up a 77/17,a mark III Target,a 4 3/4" standard from '54 (my birth year) and a 6 7/8" target from '58. I prefer their early 22s over the current guns.

The 243 didnt group that well with factory ammo and started me down the reloading path.It was very easy to develop loads that grouped under a minute of angle and I was hooked!

Nice collection of Rugers SaxonPig. Always wanted a #1 in 7x57mm, just never got one. My first handgun was a 3 screw Single Six, with the extra .22 mag. cylinder in that little red felt bag. I shot and carried that revolver so much, I started to wear away the finish on the aluminum grip frame and ejector housing, so I just polished the rest off for a "Pinto" look. One of the few guns I have sold over the years I still regret. A Bearcat has since taken its place.

Still own a 1st production run .44 Deerstalker that was a gift from Bill Ruger to my father, a couple 77's, a .44 Redhawk, 10/22, target MK ll, and a dozen or so various SA's.

The only .22 handgun I've ever owned is the venerable Ruger "Mark" and Standard. I currently have a MarkIII 22/45 and a second generation 6" Standard. I've owned probably 10 of them in the last 50 years:)

Very nice collection and commentary. Wow, five standards for five one hundred dollar bills!

I've always liked most Ruger products but I've only owned three. One is a Ruger Standard from around 1980. Another is a MK II Target from the 90s. However my favorite is my stainless, 6 inch Security Six bought new in 1977. And it was my very first handgun. The picture was taken after I added Ruger target grips. A Ruger that I'd like to find is a 9 mm Speed Six, but they usually command a price I'm unwilling to pay.

Ruger, 6 inch, Security Six bought new in 1977.

Nice collection and story, I am not a big Ruger guy but they do tend to multiply, here are a few of mine

Sorry about the Marlin in the pic, its the only pic I have of my 10/22

Have/had a bunch of Rugers over the years.

When I first got approved by the people’s republic of NY back in the early 70s to buy a pistol you could not find a good K frame (new or used) so I settled on the then brand new Security Six blue 4’’ .357 adjustable sights. Still have it and it has went threw a lot of rounds over the years. Buying that gun was a very good decision!

A year or so later wanted a .44M same thing no N frames around got a super Blackhawk. It was a decent gun. I was to a pistol match and Austin Belerht <sp> did a great trigger job on it. Kept that one a couple years and found a Smith29 and the Ruger went to a new owner.

Got the first stainless steel Mini 14 that hit the Albany area way back when. Still have it and its one of the good one’s rather accurate for that model of gun. I took a drill and enlarged the peep a coupe drill sizes, helped me a lot.

Picked up a 1022 from a fellow at the gun club who need some money. Had it for 15 years, my son now has it

Soon as the 7722 came out I got one with a Leupold 4X on it, great gun it thinks it’s a target rifle, won a lot of friendly bets with it (Coffee, lunch, soda) Still have it.

Liked the 7722 so much I got a 77 in .22 Magnum and also in .17 Both now gone but were still rather nice guns.

My long time best friend and hunting companion died 10 years back and his wife gave me his .44 Carbine. Great little gun it has a 2 ½ scope on it with pivot ,mounts and is very accurate, my buddy took many deer with this gun. Of course I still have it, shoot it every now and then but never took it out hunting myself since he died. I have 2 people that are just itching to buy that gun off me If I ever decide to sell!

Although I like Rugers and seem to shoot them quite often I never really considered myself a Ruger fan even though I bought my first one over 30 years ago. So, I just took a peak in my vault and counted EIGHT Rugers inside . . . maybe I'm more of a fan than I thought.

Lot of nice Rugers in this thread. SP, really like those #1's. I sold off a first year GP-100 and a nice Single-six convertible over the years but still have the stubby SP101 in .357, a SBH with 10.5" bull barrel, a pretty old 10/22 and a stubby 22/45.

I'd like to find a deal on a BH, 45C\45acp convertible with a 4 5\8" tube.

To the guys still boycotting Ruger: I get it. But Bill Sr. is dead and his sons now running the company have stated their dad erred in supporting the law and they vowed to always fight for the Second Amendment. I relented when I heard that. Time to move on.
