My introduction to the Nikon P 223 scopes was in this Forum section. I have wanted one since then.
I saw a 3x9x40 P 223 in Walmart and when I saw the price tag, my jaw dropped. $89.00. I brought it home and haven`t decided if its going on my Axis or my Sport.
Any suggestions on rings for the Sport? If possible I would like to still use the A2 irons.
Thanks

I prefer one-piece mounts designed for an AR platform.
Nikon makes one, M-223. I have a Burris PEPR. There are lots to choose from. For just rings 1in are the right height for cheek weld.

I'd go with the Burris PEPR in the QD version. Easy on/off of the scope for when you want to use the iron sights.

And heck of a buy!

I like the rings that are made for the P223.

I was looking at the same set up for my Sport, but found Nikon Mounts expensive and dificult to take off. I put two cheap clamps on a one inch riser that had easy off knobs that i could take off by hand and were fairly consistent with my zero, when I took them on and off. I swich between a red dot for home protection and the scope for the range, and elephant hunts.... those suckers are hard to bring down with a 55 gr 223 at 2000 yards!! They are even harder to find here in North Georgia.

Good scope mounts, I have three scopes mounted with them. Just be aware that these slide on the rail from the charging handle end, and being two piece, with a scope mounted, would be almost impossible to remove, much less convenient.

I used a set of truglo 1/2" risers on two of my AR's with these mounts so I could remove the scope easier and elevate above the FSP a bit so I didn't have any ghosting on 3x magnification.

Between the risers and these p22 mounts, you are almost at the cost of the PEPR QD mount which would be much more suitable for the OP's intended use.

If you wanted a cheaper route without a QD mounting system, I have found the CCOP mounts on Amazon to be excellent and generally less than thirty bucks.

All worth considering. I appreciate your input.
I may remove the Weaver scope from my Axis just to check out the Nikon.
The weaver isnt a bad scope, Kaspa 3x9 var,but the Nikons optics give better eye relief and are sharper.
When I decide which scope goes where I hope to have decided on which rings for the Sport.
Thanks

Just a follow up.
The Nikon would not bed cleanly in the rings I already have on my Axis and there was not enough travel in the base to adjust for a proper fit, so the P 223 went on the Sport. I jumped at the low cost and great reviews for the UTG rings, mounted and bore sighted and finally zeroed at 100yds today.
The impact point was easily adjusted from the initial 25yd zero and I was very pleased with the results. POI was right where it was supposed to be from measurements made from the 25yd group to 100yds.
When I am bucks up I may spring for the Nikon one or two piece rings only because the extra height may be a little better.
I lucked out getting this scope at a very low cost. It compliments the Sports accuracy for sure. Im a happy camper.

I too do not like the way the Nikon mounts have to be slid onto the rail.

My vote is for something from warnescopemounts.com or at least Warne brand name in general...

Their "QD" mounts, (I recently bought XSKEL for another rifle) serve my GSR very well...was a no brainer for me as to what brand to go-to when it came to a mount for rifle #2 with picatinny mounts. Again...incredible machining, tapping, ano-finish, accuracy on/off/on, etc.

I have P223 mounts in one piece and two-piece. That said, I also have a set of the $20 UTG mounts that I bought for my latest build (a 7.62). The UTG stuff is pretty darned good. I don't think the finish is as pretty as the Nikon parts but its 1/3 the price. The rifle has had about 200 rounds through it and the mounts are tight and straight. Is it just me, or does 7.62 have a real kick to it? My shoulder thinks so.

7.62X51 might cause a little discomfort if you shoot it all day long and 7.62x39 a lot less. I made a cushion for my old Marine Corps shooting jacket and it helps a lot.
Glad you like the UTG`s. They seem to work just fine but for me I think adding a 1/2" riser will make things easier with a little more height.
I was the only kid on the block with an all stock Sport but not anymore. Maybe next, a forward handguard with a swivel attachment so I can attach a bipod.

I installed a riser under the scope mount to allow access to the charging handle and enough height to allow a light, etc on the flat top. The riser has quick disconnect knobs to swap it out, which is much better than the awkward slide-on installation required by the Nikon mount.

7.62X51/.308 isn't bad if the action is gas driven. In a bolt gun, a decent butt pad or a brake is nice to have if you are going to do a lot of shooting. It's not bad but it's not shooting a 7.62X39 or 5.56 either. Definitely more kick and boom when the trigger is pulled.

You guys are panzzies!!! :D. My favorite thing to shoot, if I have to use a bench, is a afternoon full of surplus rifles. Nothing like putting several hundred rounds of 8mm Mauser or 7.62x54 or 303 on a sunny day!
