The 'unofficial' 58 Club

Saw a LNIB 1964 blue sell for almost $1700 on Monday night over on GunBroker...I think that is one of the highest prices I have seen for one LNIB... Looked like it had just come off the UPS truck in 1964...

Came back for another look. Some nice 58s have been added.
Iggy I like a six-gun showing honest wear, shows the owner trusted it & it's earned it's keep.

At 466 fpe, the 210 grain leaving the Model 58's 4" barrel was perfect for both police and civilian 'serious social work'. Many tried using the hunting-level loads for personal defense, and unless you were built like Arnold Schwartzenegger, you suffered the consequences.

When properly loaded for it's intended role, the old Model 58 served, and still serves well.

I've always been a fan of the Model 58 and finally picked one up this weekend! My buddy who knew I had a thing for them ran across this one in a local shop, so I immediately went by and made a deal on it! While researching the serial number I ran across this thread and spent the last couple of days looking at all of the great 58's you all have!! Here are a couple of pictures I just took of mine...
It's really clean but not perfect - just the way I like them, so I'll actually go ahead and shoot/use them!! No box or papers, but the grips match, so that's nice!
My serial number is N54733, so the best I can tell it's about a '72??

With her dress shoes on.....

That's a great looking 58 you have. Congrats. I agree on the 1972 manufacture estimate. Ship date is another story. .......

A couple of weeks ago I had the chance to chronograph and waterbox some old original Winchester and Remington 210 LSWC POLICE loads....

At 950 fps these loads are very controllable but I would only rate them a little better that .45 ACP in energy delivery...

..oh...and the box or Remingtons was an old 210 JSP box...they run 1300 and really penetrate...

I loaded up some 210 Keith lead HPs to the same velocity and they blew the carton apart and split open the fist plastic jug. Pieces of the nose were found in the jug and the shank of the bullet penetrated all the way to the vest insert.

...and of course the more velocity the more damage...

This was the same bullet but with a penta-point HP...1188 fps...

I've become a very big fan of HP lead bullets... Think I'm going to make 9.0 grains of Unique with a MV of 1100 fps my standard with these HPs...

Thanks. I'm really happy that I found this one!! I had the chance to put a few rounds through it this week, and was amazed how well it shot! I had a few 3 shot groups go 1" at 25 yards when shooting SA...and had one 2" group at the same distance when shooting DA!! These were some pretty light loads, but the sights were dead on for the rounds so I was super happy with the shooting!! She's definitely a keeper!!

Some nice guns since I looked last, thanks everyone for sharing.
It's interesting how the old Rem. & WW "Police" loads performed I've always read that they leadded badly, but have never had any to shoot myself.
Thanks for your findings.

Nice to see the club is still meeting. Love to look at and read about all things model 58 and 41 magnum.
I made my model 58 my avatar !

I dont own one so maybe i shouldnt post here? For police work yes the frame size might be to large , as a caliber in the right package I would say it equal to were the 40cal fits between the 9mm and 45 ACP.

More powerful than the 40cal, 9mm & 45cap. The N frame handles the 41 mag perfect in the m58. The 41mag is closer to the 44mag in power.

...yes and no...

The 210 jacketed soft point was pretty close to .44 Magnum and game hit with it would not know the difference...

But the 210 lead semi-wadcutter Police load isn't really much more powerful than a 180 .40 S&W.... The .41 is running 950+- from a 4" and depending on the load a 180 .40 S&W is running 900-1050 depending on the gun...

And a 230 .45 ACP +P will run in the 900s and unlike the .41 LSWC will expand at those velocities...

It isn't till one gets into the 12-1300s with a good expanding JHP like a Silvertip, COP or Barnes will you begin to see some difference...

I enjoy looking through this thread; there are some great looking guns shown that people should be very proud of.
This is my modified 58. I initially had intentions of converting it back to its original form (I have the original cylinder and barrel), but I just like it too much. The gun was converted in the early 80's by the gunsmith Thelbert Almond of North Carolina. New S&W 25-2 components were used in the conversion. It is a 4 inch barreled .45acp.
I have a copy of an original article that Massad Ayoob wrote about these conversions (I've attached a scan). I was hoping that there may be some longtime S&W 58 fans out there that may remember the article. I am trying to find the magazine that it was printed in so I can get a copy.
