Siren call of pocket carry

Honestly, my own preference is to carry a full size pistol. It's usually a 1911 5 inch model, or a service size 9mm (my S&W model 539 is nice). The ONLY time I pocket carry is if there's no possible way for me to carry my full size pistols. This might be an environment where I cannot open carry, AND where a cover garment isn't permitted. Then and only then will I pocket carry a J-frame.

My wife and I dress for comfort and practicality, with style being secondary. I wear pullover garments that allow concealed carry of a Glock 22 and pocket carry a 442 as a BUG. On the very rare occasion a belt gun cannot be worn due to dress constraints, the same 442 serves as a primary with at least one reload.

For many years I have carried a .25 auto in a sheath holster in my right front pants pocket. It's enough if I need it, as I am not looking to get into a gunfight. If I ever do have to use it, it will be unloaded up close where I am not likely to miss a few vital areas. Plus I am hardly aware I have anything in my pocket, and for sure no one else does.

Also, I make it a practice to avoid those places where it is more probable I might need it. No biker bars or anything located in bad parts of town, especially after dark. I do keep a few more potent weapons within easy reach in several locations in my home.

The Ruger LCP is the 21st century equivalent of the old west derringer. Easy to hide and carry and gives one a reasonable degree of personal protection. Now if you are a gunfighter you need another choice......

I do not pocket carry my 642, unless I am just goofing off around the house, it rides in a kydex IWB on my weak side and a mdl 19 snub OWB on the strong side...... just added the 642 to EDC....

I usually carry a 40c but there are times and places I can't conceal it to the extent that I want to so I am a new owner of a Sig P238 .. so yes I have succumbed to a 38 ACP ..

Though it is small I just am not comfortable with it inside a pocket in a holster .. its just not comfortable to me with it in a pocket also the fact I can't effortless remove it from a pocket bothers me .. I've timed myself and drawing from a pants pocket to where I have a proper grip on the pistol takes me 2 to 4 times a long as drawing from a belt holster .. and is not smoothly done where it wouldn't be obvious to a BG what I was attempting to do .. so have decided to carry it in the appendix position .. or at the 5 o'clock position IWB .. its accessible in the sitting position where inside a pocket it is not ..

but that is just my preference right now .. but I'm not saying I will never carrying it in a pocket as that may be necessary sometimes in the future .. but right now I don't intend to !!

I stayed away from pocket carry for ten years. You can't draw from your pocket if you are sitting down.

Which is why I carry IWB, even with a j-frame.
Even standing up, it could be darn near impossible to draw quickly and cleanly while in pocket.

I know MANY gun owners carry in pocket, and I do not disrespect your decision, but for me......IWB is most effective.

I pocket carry my LCP from time to time. Easy way to carry.

One issue I have with pocket carry is if your seated at a table across from someone, you are possibly pointing a loaded gun at them. Noticed this when I was out with my kids once.

Needless to say I'm not comfortable in that situation, so pocket carry is limited to when I'm up walking around or at least not seated with others.

I have and love my pre improved triggered LCP. I've never seen a downside of the trigger by the way. I can easily dump all 7 rnds one handed into a paper plate sided target at 5 yards. What more can one ask of the stated mission of this gun.

Having said that, I usually stuff my full sized CZ 75B in my High Noon appendix inside waste band holster. Upper Cut to be exact. The LCP will be either left home OR as back up. BUT, the LCP has no equals when wearing a suite of business casual dockers, tucked in shirt etc... It has proven to me to be totally reliable and oh, btw way... try to look up a video in 380ACP tests on Precision One 380 ACP HP XTP bullet performance. It blew my mind how these bullets performed in expansion AND penetration on multiple tests beating out Critical Defense, Gold Dots and Buffalo Bore in an LCP sized gun. oh, here it is... Gonna carry the LCP as primary, use the best!

Wrangler Jeans have nice, deep pockets. Work fine for my LCR in a pocket holster.

Yes, they do have nice deep pockets. Deep enough for a 442 in a leather pocket holster and at least one and sometimes two speed strips.
$10 a pair on Black Friday at Wal-Mart seals the deal for me.

Does your gun have a habit of going off by itself, or are you referring to the Rule? The Rule concerns gun handling, which you shouldn't be doing.

Knowing the words isn't the same as knowing the rule, and it's the rule that's the important part.

Ah yes, the "siren call of pocket carry", indeed.

Recap of everything I've said in other, similar threads ....

Stopped carrying a big .380 more than 25 years ago (Beretta M84).

Smallest "pocketable" gun I'd carry was one of my J's. Until ...

Back in 2012 a close friend let me try his LCP. It disappeared in even my slim & tight pockets, and I'd seen some good results with them when they'd come through our qual range. Just enough smaller than the Bodyguard .380 to make it preferable.

I went down to the cop shop and bought one. I carefully trimmed a small Hogue Rubber Handall Jr Grip Sleeve to fit so my middle finger had better purchase. Handy. Accurate. Reliable. Surprising all the way around.

I liked it so much that last year I ordered one of the newer stainless versions. Taller sights (still use nail polish to see them). Even better DAO trigger.

I noticed I was able to run the new one through the usual qual course-of-fire and some drills as fast, and at times even faster, than my prized M&P340's & 642's (yes, plural, as I own a pair of each of them :) ) The little LCP was fast, controllable and accurate at the more common 3-7yd distances, but also out at the 10-15yd distances. Pleasantly surprising. (Maybe the quals and practice drills I'd done with the first one had helped? ;) )

Yes, it's still only a .380 ACP. It's neither a .38 Spl nor a 9mm. No illusions. If I want more bullet weight and "punch" in a pocket gun, I'll wear pants or jackets with larger pockets, and get one of my J's out of the safe.

I don't use hot-rodded ammo in my LCP's. I do use JHP loads.

I've tried Win T-Series & SilverTips, Rem Golden Sabre, Speer Gold Dot, and small amounts of some other JHP (Hydra-Shok?) and ball loads. Everything's fed & fired just fine in my hands, in my LCP's.

If I thought I had to rely on some specialty bullet or load for my .380's, I'd just go back to carrying my J's.

I look at the LCP as being a retirement weapon I'm willing to carry in what I consider "low risk potential" environments. My friend still carries his, but as either a 2nd or 3rd gun, most times.

FWIW, I recently picked up a NAA .22MAG 1 1/8" revolver, and still have a NAA .22LR 1 1/8" version that's languished in my safe for many years ... which have sometimes seen use as 2nd guns. I think of them as Onion Field insurance.

And, yes, there have even been some instances where the NAA .22LR or Mag might have been the only gun I carried. I did so when I thought my activities, and their locations, were so low risk that I probably didn't need to be armed at all. Onion Field thinking, though.

Kind of like leaving the house only carrying 1 folding pocket knife, instead of 3 or 4 of them, not expecting to need them in the short term.

Never said I was consistent.

I live in Florida so Often times its Shorts & T-Shirt weather,My LCP is My Most often Carried CCW Gun I have had it since 2011 & use a Desantis Super Fly Pocket Holster no matter what I am wearing it's easy to conceal/carry,Downsides to pocket carry it's about impossible to access the weapon while sitting or in A vehicle.

Summer shorts and T-shirt gets BG 380. Bigger clothes gets bigger gun, M&P 40c or 10-5 snubbie when feeling nostalgic. Wonder why LCP way more popular than the S&W BG 380. Has better sights and the built in laser. Since I grew up shooting double action revolvers the triggers on the little autos seems fine to me.

...
I always have my S&W M&P 340 (no lock) with Crimson Trace on me. I like the Gold Dot 135 gr + P short barrel. House carry also, ALWAYS. There are NO good neighborhoods!

Just ordered an M&P 340, but the grips I'm going to put on it won't let me put it in the pocket in my Levi's. Besides, if I carried it there then I'd need an owb for the puppy snacks.

I take exception to your last line above. Our whole town is 25 souls. All but one is armed, but none of us pocket carry. It's a great neighborhood, but you wouldn't like it: dirt streets, wind blows all the time, 250" of snow in the winter, 40 below zero two months of the year, and we have to watch out for the moose, wolves, mountain lions, bears, and summer tourists.

Oh, the price we each pay for where we choose to live.

I've tried it twice with a couple different guns the LCP and an LCR and I could never get it to work right.

With the LCR it looked like I had a spam can in my pocket.

Both of them I had the holster come out with the gun when I gave a few practice runs.

Forget using it if you're sitting down, squatting,or any position not standing straight up.

I've decided any pistol I carry is going to be either IWB or OWB and maybe a few odd variations (chest rig) but pocket kinda sucks.

Try to pull that gun from your jeans pocket while sitting down or squatting behind cover.

You will quickly realize the disadvantages

I'm 5'10 and 160 with size 31 jeans. I wear a Glock 23 every day comfortably and no one notices besides my wife.

I tried pocket carry at one time. I will agree it was comfortable, but I couldn't get past the compromise in firearm size and ability to draw quickly

My gun works pretty much the same as yours I'm sure. Said I was not comfortable having it pointed at my children...point yours wherever you want.

I'm quite familiar with the Rule(s) Thanks

Most of the time I carry a Kahr 9mm or XDS 45 IWB under an un-tucked shirt. On the occasions where I need tuck my shirt I will pocket carry a Kahr 380 or, if I need even deeper concealment, a KelTec 380. I've never cared for the tuckable IWB holsters and the 380 has much more stopping power than hand-thrown rocks.

All my handguns are Ruger (LC9, SR9 and sr9e. Sr9c on the way) but I couldn't go with the LCP. (Love Ruger safety features.)

I refuse to carry or own a gun without a manual safety. So I went with the SW bodyguard. 380. I either pocket carry with no holster (going to attach a pocket clip some day) or 4 o'clock carry.
