Jim, you have a knack of finding some of the most pristine of S&Ws, revolvers and now semi-autos. What a beautiful collection.

Yes, fantastic and beautiful guns! Most of which I have never even seen or heard of, so thanks for sharing. All I ever see are the plain vanilla versions and not very many of those.

Beauties all, you guys. Kudos!

Seeing those lovely Stocking Dealer guns, though, reminds me of the great one that S&W never made....

What I wouldn't give to have had a chance to get an SD 45 ACP in both the stainless and the black configurations.....:)

Why, S&W, why?

Anyone know why there were no PC 3913/14 or NLs?????

Bought my SD-9 used from a shooting buddy in about 95/96 ..... loved shooting that gun....until I found out there were only like 179 of them.....now it's a safe queen........ what a waste not shooting the PC auto from the 90s.......

Not many of these were every made. This is a 356 TSW Smith & Wesson Performance Center pistol. This is the only one I have ever scene. Notice it has a frame mounted safety. I will post more pictures of other ones later.

Not aware of any PC versions of the single stack 9 models, but there was an "almost" run of guns in the "Classic" moniker, it's my understanding that they were put together by the PC, but they did not have the traditional PC features like the Briley bushing... I have a M3953 Classic (like the one on the cover of the Standard Catalog of S&W), except mine does not have the large Classic banner on the slide. I'll try to get pics up some time, it's a cool piece.

That is a very cool gun! Back when the Performance Center started, they were essentially a custom gun manufacturer, but soon learned that short "production" runs actually made them money. At the beginning, you could order custom features like your gun has, including the frame mounted safety and custom beavertail. I've got a copy of the original flyer showing all the options, if I can locate it and scan it I'll post it here.
Your gun is very early in the PC time/history.

Edit Tying the above two comments together... :)
I just noticed that the serial prefix on that cool early PC gun was PCZ, and the prefix on my M3953 Classic also shares that prefix... must have been used for special guns early on (?)

Cool.

Here's some info on that model, from the 3rd PC Flyer, printed around 1990-1991

I have just two Performance Center pistols but I am irrationally happy with both of them. I've got an 845 Limited from the 2nd run in 1998 and I recently acquired a 5-inch PPC9. Both are shooters, neither has it's original spiffy PC case, I also don't have any PC-marked magazines which does kind of bum me out just a wee bit.

As they are shooters, I don't mind not having the cases and documents, but if I had even just -ONE- single PC-marked magazine for each, that would make me grin from ear to ear.

I got a really terrific deal on the 845. I believe I paid "market" or perhaps just under for the PPC9. If I add them together and divide by two, I'm extremely satisfied with the kind of money I laid out to own them.

Maybe it's the wallet-shock that is still reverberating -- but I really feel like I'm (basically) out of the PC market now. Not because they aren't truly phenomenal (the PC semi-autos are quite simply my favorite firearms on this planet!) but more so because of the market for them. I just kind of feel like I have two of the absolute best they ever put together and I can be happy with them.

And not to ruffle any feathers:
...but I have two other pistols that I fully consider to be "Performance Center" semi-autos. These are my Model 52's. My first one is an A77 prefix and it likely dates to 1982. The one I just picked up is a late production TZT-prefix. In my (not at all) humble opinion, these absolutely ARE Performance Center crafted handguns... these simply came from Smith & Wesson before they came up with the very slick PC logo and moniker we have all grown to love passionately.

My Model 52-2 pistols are simply inspiring and they ooze exactly the same kind of unbelievable goodness that my 845 and PPC9 exhibit.

If you happen to be reading this thread and simply haven't had the good fortune to put your hands around a true PC pistol, I genuinely hope you get the chance. And if you find yourself priced out of the market (the prices... they are NOT low), then consider putting hands on a Model 52. With all my heart, I believe the Model 52's are PC pistols without the logo, with an old-school look and somewhere in the area of HALF the market price.

Your SD-40 has fixed sights...... never seen another SD with a fixed Novak rear sight.

My SD-9 came with Novack sights but there was/is an adjustable sight in the box.........

It's lettered from Roy Jinks who confirms it shipped with a rear Novak sight.

Wow wow WOW!

Never seen one of these, and I consider myself a 356TSW enthusiast. (And thanks, SmithNut, for the info flyer that describes Rolling Stones' gun). How interesting that it is slide-marked on the right "Competition Use Only" -- I'm guessing that's because the mag capacity exceeded the limit at the time.

Would love to hear more about this one if you'd care to share. In the meantime, I'll just enjoy its drool-worthiness! :)
