The ultimate Highway Patrolman thread.including N frame ser# ranges

Blitz, if your Highway Patrolman is an N prefix, 5 digit serial beginning with 97, it's in a completely different time frame from a N97 with 6 digits:
Yours N97xxx would be at the beginning of N production, probably 1971 or '72.
A 6 digit N97xxxx was manufactured circa 1985.

Ok I get it now. I was being a fool. The numbers are just flat sequential after the "N". I was thinking N97 meant something and the numbers after that were the sequence. Yep, now that I look at it in a new light it was made between 69-72. Thanks.

Like Lay's Potato Chips, ya can't just have one...

I just purchased a HP, S/N 5XX911 (funny, those last three digits) for $550 plus the usual DROS/tax. Six inch barrel, original grips. Finish probably better than 90%, only noticeable wear on the right side of the frame near the grip (fellow must have rested his hand on his holster a lot). Nine more days before it's released to me (waiting period). I had been to the Chico, CA gun show earlier that day, prices were pretty outrageous for a decent used S&W .357...found this one on consignment two blocks from the show. Hope it's worth what I paid.

Since I posted this, I went back to the local sporting goods store and picked up my 28-2's little brother, a 28-3 in absolutely new condition...bluing at 99% or better, no holster wear, 6 inch non-pinned barrel, original grips, S/N N9606XX for $600 plus tax and the usual DROS fee. Not sure where this S/N places the manufacture of this revolver, but it's a pretty high one.

Finally got my letter from Roy Jinks. "...shipped from the factory on January 20, 1971, and delivered to Hall of Justice, San Francisco, CA. "

I also have a SFPD-marked 4". Mine has a serial of N171xx. Guess I'll have to look into its history too!

Thanks for sharing.

waitaminute.... You have N97?

I have N96. Model 28-2. Does your gun have a DPS serial number engraved on the left side of the frame?

This is my 28-2.A gift from a friend.Serial # S2473XX. Grips are numbered but to a different revolver. #239396.

When I got this a little over a week ago it looked to my untrained eye as have never been fired.I now have about 200 to 300 rounds through it and it shoots great. It would shoot better if I could see the front sight better.I did replace the grips and I am thinking about having it drilled and tapped for a factory scope mount so that I can put a red dot sight on it

The gun came in the original box with tools and a invoice from Badger shooting supply dated 7-7-64

Gents,

I just picked this up 3 weeks ago can you shed some light on production dates this M 28 6' was not factory Nickel - but person who sold it to me said he got it that way .

Thanks

Petersn

1957 Model 28 Ser#184201

Hey all, I have been looking to find out when this was mfg. and ran across this forum today. If I am right it is a 1957/58 HP 6". This belonged to my Grandfather and then my Father. It was given to me many years ago after it was being played with by my step brother who accidently shot himself. That was in the 70's and has not been fired since.

Dad used it when Bear hunting. So he removed the rear sight and over the years has been lost. He installed a pistol sight which I think is a Bushnell.

Any additional info is appreciated.

John

NoFear37:
According to the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson, S194201 was made in 1958/59.
Regarding your step brother, I sure hope he survived that incident.

My Newly Acquired 28-2

As I said in another post, I have wanted a 28-2 4' barrel for the longest. I finally scored one off Gunbroker. Made it to the range this past Friday for my first outing with it. Fell in love with it as I knew I would. Just knew I'd come across one if I persevered long enough. Serial #N5562XX. I'll post these pics along with it.

I traded for a 4" M-28 yesterday. It's a old S-prefix gun (S222XXX). That should put it as being built between 1961 and 1962. Has a couple of rough spots on it, but she cleaned up pretty good. This one is a keeper!

That is a beautiful gun and package of factory items. If it were mine I would not have it drilled and tapped. It will lose collector value if you do. And that is fairly valuable package you have.
There are many newer guns you could buy that are already drilled and tapped for aftermarket sights. That way you save the collector value and add another gun to the stable. Win Win. JA

I concur, you should always get premium money for that gun if you keep it in the condition as viewed.
