Hi all,
I'm trying to find the manufacturing date of that S&W model 686 s/n AYJ9122. It's been purchased here in France. By the way, above the serial number there are the 4 letters KETT engraved, what do these letters mean? It might be coming from a great German company selling guns here in western Europe whose name is Edward Kettner, but I'm not sure....

Many thanks for your help.
Have a great Sunday.

Jack, looking in my copy of the SCSW, the nearest I can narrow it down looks to be somewhere in the July to December 1987 time frame.

Maybe the Kernel or someone else more knowledgeable can narrow it down further for you. :)

And welcome to the forums!

Many thanks Muddoktor for these infos. I don't really need to get better accuracy. I'm selling that revolver for one of my club mates who is not very gifted when it comes to use a computer. Therefore I'm trying to help him a bit in the deal.
No ideas of what could be these KETT letters?
Another question, if I may, I couldn't find the way of putting a picture directly in my post, when I click on "Insert Image" the system asks me for an URL. I'd like the system to allow me search in my computer the image I want to stick into my post....
Have good time.
Greetings from France.

As to the "KETT" on the pistol, I don't know. But it might be the mark of the importer of that pistol.

As for inserting or attaching an image, there are a couple of ways to do so on the forum software. If you have a site that you already have an image uploaded to, you can use the "insert image" icon in the "reply to" header. You can also directly attach a jpg image file directly by scrolling down and clicking on the "manage attachments" button and uploading an image there.

Example here: A picture I have uploaded to photobucket and inserted into the post:

Now I will attach a pic to this post by the "manage attachments" button for you. It will show at the bottom of this post and you click on it.

Hope that helps you out.

Jim

Looks like some German proof marks. You can see one on the barrel, too. Normal for an export gun. "88" was probably the year it was proofed, which would agree with s/n date. The gun was likely made in the Fall of 1987.

"Kett" I would guess is the German importer, since the OP knows of a company with a similar name. Call or email that company. They might tell you if it was their gun, and when it came over and how many were imported.

The gun is marked with an "M", so it has had the recall modification.

Good evening Kernel and thank you very much for such good and accurate information.
What is the "recall modification"? That's only for my personal culture...:-)
So my guess was probably right in thinking that the KETT letters stand for Edward Kettner Company from Germany rather famous in the nineties over here.
Everything is fine now regarding that gun. Later on, I'll ask a few more questions about my own S&Ws.
About the "Attachments Manager", once the picture has been uploaded and its name appeares in the frame "Attach files", how can you validate the attachment? I still don't understand:eek:
Regards.

Right, mechanical cylinder issue due to particular industrial ammo, if I understand well. I only use home-reloaded ammo in my different handguns.
Sorry to insist, but I'm still unable to join a picture to my post :-)
Sleep well 'cause you should be in the Morpheus' arms by the time I'm writing...
Have a great week.

:):):) maybe but I did it without knowing what I was doing...
Now what can you tell me on my Model 29-5 s/n BFH8693 and my Model 19 s/n 68K1423, please?
Many thanks and good day....
Regards.
Jack

.....Model 29-5 s/n BFH8693 ......

September - November 1990.

Give or take. Blue guns, for some reason, tended to sit around at S&W for a longer time during this era in the '90's. Probably because Stainless guns were more popular. It was probably some time in 1991 by the time it made it to the "Old World".

I only study the newer guns, so some other member will have to help you out with the Model 19. I'm using my SCoSW to hold up a leg on my kitchen table, so I can't access it right now. ;)

Hello to all,
Someone told me that my revolver Model 19 s/n 68K1423 was manufactured in 1980. Therefore, as I'm not sure about the date, I don't know where to put my question, in the section "before 1980" or the one after:confused:
Many thanks for your help/comments.
Friendly.
Jack
