Mod. 36 - are all 3 inch guns heavy barrel?

As can be seen in the photos, the heavy barrels had larger sights like the M10. Big improvement over the 1/10 inch. Wish I had mine back.

Heavy vs. tappered barrel weight and shooting

What is the weight difference between a heavy and tapered barrel gun.
Which is better for carrying and shooting.
Is there one that is preferred for concealed carry?

I like the looks and feel of a 3 inch barrel. The extra inch sight radius and larger sights make it a lot easier to shoot well. I also feel the inch going from 2 to 3 helps ballistics more than the inch going from 3 to 4.

Don't have a digital scale but using a postal balance I came up with a 1 1/4 ounce weight difference between the two 3" barrel profiles.

Both profiles are equally comfortable to carry but I find the 3" heavy preferable for shooting. The heavy barrel dampens the recoil and with a square butt points as natural as anything I've ever shot.

I don't believe it would make a good pocket pistol but I have carried concealed the 3" heavy in both an inside and outside the belt holster . . . easy to conceal and quite comfortable.

Here a little better photo of my taper barrel 36.

To my eye the HB has a stout, all business look to it but be that as it may the taper barrel has that classic, old school look that I prefer. Would still like to pick up a 3" HB if the opportunity presents itself.

Thanks for the reply. I am shopping for a classic Model 36. I have a classic 1959 Model 34 flat latch blued 4" with round diamond grips and love it. I have been searching for a classic blued model 36" and am researching this world of flat latch, pinned barrel, tappered vs. heavy barrel, recessed cylinder (non existent), round grip. I want to carry it sometimes in an owb in the woods for bird hunting loaded with +P for bears or wolves. I will shoot it with wadcutters otherwise. Thanks to this group I think that I have settled on a blued 3" tappered barrel with round diamond grips to match my 34. I was fascinated with finding one with adjustable sights but it looks like they are non-existent. What do you all think.

They must be pretty rare. Thanks everyone. It looks like I have found the one of my dreams thanks to this board.

I think these j frame 3 inch models just handle and shoot great! Love em

"They made 4" J frames in .22, .32 and .38 S&W but not .38spl"

There was short-lived 60-18 with a five inch barrel, wish I had bought the only one I ever saw in the ferrous flesh.

Was that the .357 or a .38 Special? I had one of these 5" .357s for a short time. Not very practical and certainly not well-balanced, but the same would apply to a .38 Special version.

Here's a Model 36-1 circa 1972 that worked for a living....

I have a 15-3 that I bought in '89 that has the same stamping except it's number 671.
My only 36 is a 3" taper that someone had cerakoted before I came across it. The price worked out good and I was able to trade the CTC grips on it to Curt Harlow for a pair of custom grips in thuya wood.
