During a visit to a local cemetery, I noticed on a veteran's bronze plaque (the one furnished by the VA placed in the ground or attached to the headstone) the letters POWM. It had DFC (Distinguished Flying Cross) and POWM. Anyone know what POWM means?

Might be a foreign award of some kind? Kinda like: OBE--Order of the British Empire, LoM-Legion of Merit, etc.

Got it. Strange because they are all medals…why therefore place a "M" at the end. The DFC didn't have DFCM. Nonetheless, I believe your probably correct with the POWM. He was a Capt., in WWll and I think he died in 2015. Thanks

I noticed in the provided list it is EX POW. It's federal government issued…who really knows who does the engraving. Maybe a civilian with no military background or it's simply PC today. Thanks everyone for the website info.

According to the linked info, the P O W medal was only authorized in Reagan's presidency (1985).
Most of the W W II P O Ws are now deceased, but next of kin can ask for the medal.

Why the M?

The DFC is the Distinguished Flying Cross. A medal.

But POW? POW is a person. POWM lets you know you are referring to the medal and not the man.

JameArthur60, love your avatar. My dad served with the 406th Fighter Group 514th Squadron. He wasn't a pilot either (drove trucks and worked on the P-47 armament), but did earn 6 BSM's. So, I've always had a thing for the Thunderbolts.

Thanks for your service.

Dunno know how else to explain it?
Just thought of this:
War Merit Medal:

I cant stand how some countries define such things when you mean something specific. Not talking of the quoted persons post of course. However, some other countries define these earned decorations differently-thusly, thats why I posted pics off WWII German stuff.

My Grandfather was in the Merchant Marine in WWII. He earned a rare award-the: Merchant Mariners Medal for War Wounded. One of these:

He wasnt awarded actual medals for combat etc zones-just the ribbons.

I dont collect Mother's medals but, that's avery nice one.

I collect: Qualification badges and bravery medals-and cloth rank insignia. Collecting Imperial and WWII German-is addicting. Forgot, I also collect award documents and honor lists. I have probably about 100 diff medals and baddges including stickpins ( minitures of combat and bravery badges) in the collection.

Forgot to mention: Its some of the simplist of some awards that I really like the best even if not worth so much. Ive gor severl War Meerit Crosses with swords 2nd class(in bronze-----like the one above-and actually have one taken off the machine unfinished-with slag) and the Russian Front Medal--commonly known as: The Frozen Meat Medal-or Order of the frozen Flesh. Ive several of those as well. That badge in particular-was designed by a German soldier--and the helmet and grenade design is one of my favorites. This medal was made in the millions and awarded to any soldier who served through the winter of 41-42--on the Eastern Front--or for 6 months continuous service? Both of these are relativly cheap and commonly found. The East Front Medal should go for no more than about $35, the WMC 2nd--about $10 more.

...do you buy anything online?...I was wondering if there are any reputable dealers online?...

Ive bought mostly inline or through collector/friends. I only got two items of all items I ever bought-that were fakes from an online dealer-who didnt know they were fakes they looked THAT good. One was an 8-place imperiaol/WWII German ribbon ar that looked absolutely great--same with the mini insignias atached to their ribbons. Turned out fake-because no real ribbon bars used brass backings-otherwise--you just couldnt tell. The other-and cost me mush more at the time--was a pair of German Generalleutnants shoulderboards. You just couldnt tell except for one minor thing.

My favorite dealer was out of Hamburg, Germany. He was Detlev Niemann. He retired several years ago but also posted he may restart his business. At this time, I dont know if he ever restarted? His site used to be: www.detlevniemann.com

Others ive dealt with include: Black Cross Military Collectibles and he was the one I got two fakes from-but I dont hold it against him as one cant expect to know everything there is. He is a bit high, but 99% of the time-has authentic stuff.

Another ive dealt with is: www.carstenbaldes.com--he's ok.

www.helmutweitze.com He is also in germany and mostly has good items.

For strictly Imperial: www.bluemax.com He is a great guy and will spend as much time with you as possible. Hes based out of Florida.
And there are others but, its been a long time sinse I last was able to buy anything online.

One more good one that comes to mind is a nice guy in Canada: www.medalsandbadges.com He is priced reasonably. This is a sideline business of his so he doesnt have to make a huge profit.

One in England I have bought from and do like is: www.whartonmilitaria.com He is the one I bought both 57 versions of the Knights Cross from--including .999 silver spares of Oaks and Oaks and Swords.

There are a few id STAY AWAY from like: www.therupturedduck.com
Anoth stay away from is: www.jamiecross.com He is in England and knowingly sells fakes. However, i have other differences with him because he is a BALD-FACED LIAR. Small case in point: I traded two Imperial German medal bars to a friend in Washington-for an Imperial German grouping consisting of: an Imperial EKII and I--with award docs-awarded to a NCO of the third Marine Infantry Regiment. His awarding of the EKI--was a rare award for non-officers.

Anyway, the two bars I traded to my friend-were a 3 and a 4 placee medal bar-awarded to different men who were in a Bavarian Regiment in WWI. Just because both had the same awards in the same p-laces-with nr 4 added onto the other--when jamie cross got them in a trade from my friend--cross invented a VERY fictional story about both medal bars. Ive never cared for he or his wares-he IS a crook.

There is another crook-out of Sweden--but I long sinse have forgotten his name. I have a LONG story on this creep who took over a year-to complete a deal.

One link above is incorrect--its not blue max-its www.derrittmeister.com Ill fix when I have more time.
