Ancestory DNA

Keelboatman Geneology from Mark Twain

I always liked this genealogy for a keelboatman in Mark Twain's Life on The Misssisippi:

"Sired by a hurricane, dam'd by an earthquake, half-brother to the cholera, nearly related to the small-pox on the mother's side!"

Then on his general habits:

"Look at me! I take nineteen alligators and a bar'l of whiskey for breakfast when I'm in robust health, and a bushel of rattlesnakes and a dead body when I'm ailing! I split the everlasting rocks with my glance, and I squench the thunder when I speak! Whoo-oop! Stand back and give me room according to my strength! Blood's my natural drink, and the wails of the dying is music to my ear! Cast your eye on me, gentlemen!—and lay low and hold your breath, for I'm bout to turn myself loose!"

I got this test kit as a gift for Christmas and said there is no way in heck I am sending my most private information off to a third party. Wonder if that information can be subpoenaed?

I am fascinated with it though:)

I find it humorous that some are horrified that one of their ancestors was hanged or a criminal.

I knew a Dr who's father was a minister. Very well respected family. Last time I was in my home town I stayed at his place. He has past, but his wife is a grand lady. She was telling me that on one of their trips to England the visited the site of the last hanging there. It was one of his ancestors (they knew this before going). She said the grounds keeper was apologetic about the upkeep of the site. They just regarded it as a bit of interesting family trivia.

Knowing my family some of them surely stepped outside the law. Plus, I know that one of my ancestors on my maternal side, shipped aboard a whaler and never came back. Maybe he didn't make it or maybe I have relatives in Hawaii or somewhere. LOL

Although the test is for your ancestral DNA I don't know if it could be subpoenaed. I bought and paid for it. I also bought and paid for my car. Neither of which can be taken without the courts. If the court wants your DNA they can subpoena a mouth swab and have it, why bother with what I send in.

When the legal system takes your DNA it is by mouth swab. I was sitting in court in WA state, over a matter where my late wife was injured. There were several cases in front of that one and upon pleading guilty to the offenses, the convicted were mouth swabbed. Plus, one of my sister in laws works as a supervisor at thee state crime lab here in MT. Trustt me they don't need your blood to find out your DNA.

Like I said all you have to provide is a name. No ID nothing. I could have used Les Wad. Besides there is no chain of custody. I could of filled it with spit from anybody. Think it would make poor evidence.

I've done some research through the Mormon genealogy website which is free. I'm not Mormon by the way, the site is free for anyone to access.

Anyway, I found a copy of my parents marriage license. It showed their wedding date to be in August and my sister, their first child, was born in February of the following year. So I figured it was a "shotgun wedding". My sister never knew this and when I told her she was visibly shocked and said "NO WAY". I thought it was hilarious.

My brother and I got tested through Ancestry.com at the same time last year. They identified us a siblings, but almost all of our information was different.

That surprises me. I thought all siblings from the same two parents would have the same genetic information.

My sister did the DNA test. I'm pretty sure we have the same parents, so mine should be the same.

We were always told we were mostly Scottish. Apparently some of my ancestors lost a few rounds of hide and seek with the Viking horde, since we are 26% Scandanavian.

I bet these tests can cause some lively discussions. As the saying goes: Momma's baby, Daddy's maybe.

It'd be interesting to know how they store and safeguard all this DNA info. Surely there's no chance it'll wind up in the hands of the govt some day. * wink/nod *

I mean no disrespect to anyone who pursues the path to DNA results, I hope you find that which you seek.

But for me, I find no value in it . . . kind of like a S&W or Colt factory letter. I obviously don't get it.

Me either. My brother is very involved in this sort of pursuit. He enjoys it so no big deal to me. What I find when he shows this stuff to me though interesting is of no real value to finding ancestors. Every conquering army since the stone age has left their genetic contribution behind wherever they went. Bloodlines at best are mixed origins.

Exactly! Which is what fascinates me. I know where I'm from but who were my great grandparents? Or their parents? Where were they from? How and when did they get there?!? I found out that despite being Eastern European my last name is from 13th century Germany! I just find it fascinating

That's my concern as well. So far the government only has my fingerprints from my military service. Nowadays all military personnel and all newborns have DNA samples catalogued by the government. Plots of certain books by Aldous Huxley and George Orwell come to mind.

Longtime lawyer in the criminal arena here: I have a pretty good idea of the tech capabilities right now. If Leviathan wants your DNA workup, it will have no problem obtaining samples that will allow it. Easy as picking a coffee cup out of your office trash, so don't let that be the reason you don't get tested.

I'm adopted and I sent mine in. I was raised "Polish-American" but I'm hoping to find that I'm part African-American so I can check that box on job applications. Go back far enough on your family tree and you'll find that we're all related.

I've thought of this, too. Family tradition says my Grandfather got out of Ireland a step ahead of the Black and Tans after the Easter rebellion. What if a drop of Strangers' blood were to show up? The Horror!!!

Just because someone CAN get my DNA or other info, that doesn't mean I want to or it'd be prudent to GIVE it to them.

Heck with that logic, maybe we should all volunteer the make, model and serial numbers of any firearms we own. Maybe include an inventory of ammo and accessories too!
