Generally they came with magna grips unless special ordered with target grips.

According to the book they came with both magna and target grips. I would think those that came with targets would be a bit uncommon since the whole point of the M28 was to save money. Those grips you have on your gun are approaching Cokes in price these days. Very hard to find. I've got a pair of early small football relieved diamond targets on one of mine. They predate the gun by a good 12 years; but, I like the way they look and handle. A much trimmer and slightly smaller grip than the ones that started coming out around 1970ish.

Timely Post for me-wondering about grips on my 28-2

I was cleaning my small collection of Revolvers tonight and was curious about these grips on my 28-2.. Any ideas?
Thanks!

Welcome to the FORUM! Nice 28 you have there! Nice wood too! Put on it whatever you wish. (whatever feels/ look good to you) Hang on to those though. I have a 28 no dash 6" from 1960. Have correct era diamond targets for it, but is wearing Herretts. Enjoy your 28! Bob

But the extra cost of targets was around $5 back then. Police departments may not have wanted to pay the extra, but for an individual it probably didn't seem like too much if they fit his hand better.

Of course, I know $5 would buy a lot more back then than it does now ...

It is something of a moot point though, since almost certainly those stocks were not factory original, but added by a later owner.

Thanks for the welcome , so these grips are worth a couple hundred dollars and I should not be going to the range and banging them around , just get some others for shooting ,thanks for the heads up. I do like the look and feel they feel like they have a nice palm swell compared to my other revolvers

The standard (non-Coke Bottle shaped) target stocks with the diamond insert around the the grip screw escutcheon were sold by Smith & Wesson until some time in 1969. Although the M28-2 was shipped with magna service grips as standard; back then target grips, hammers, triggers and sights could be special ordered. Further some dealers would swap grips or other "target" options after deliver from Smith & Wesson or the wholesaler based on what was currently in demand in their area. I do not believe that target stocks were ever numbered to guns at the factory. The diamond target stocks on your gun are period correct for it's manufacture date but the only way to know if the gun had then when shipped from the factory is to "letter" the gun.

Bruce, be advised that they are unrelieved diamond targets...
