A 66-2 would have an alpha numeric serial number that is found on the bottom of the butt( example ALH3401 )

The 66-2 were made from 1982-1986

mine doesn't it's 3 numbers one letter and 3 numbers

Does it have a pinned barrel or recessed cylinder holes and or the letter in the serial is a K?.Then it's an early 66-2 made from some parts used in the 66-1.

If so it may date to late 1981 or early 1982.

EDIT: A factory letter or the original box Special Order Number would reveal the gun's shipping date from the factory.

No pinned barrel or recessed cylinder holes But the letter is a K

Sounds like S&W found an older frame in inventory and used it to make your 66-2 so there's no telling when it shipped without a factory letter unless customer service can sully some info on your revolver.

This is not unusual for Smith. They never threw anything away that they could use.

So does that help, hurt, or no effect on value?

S&W continued using old style s/n's on a limited bases on certain K-frames well after the triple-alpha/four-numeric s/n. The transition was several years.

I've seen old style s/n's on K-frames shipped as late as 1984. There weren't many such guns, but a few. This practice is also seen with with N and J-frames.

I don't know that it's true that all of these guns were old frames or old stock, since I don't think Smith serializes raw frames. Nor would it be a good business practice to warehouse an inventory of popular assembled guns that sell easily -- like the M66.

What about the model 19. Saw a ad today for a 19-3 2.5" that was P&R.

Model 19's were pinned & recessed through the dash 4 variation. Dash 5's are not P&R.

The OP's 66-2 most likely shipped around the latter part of 1982.

MOD 66-2

My MOD 66-2 butt number is 206K7XX. I think it dates to 1983. It also has a K stamped on the cylinder. The grips have no numbers on them. Not P&R.
