As a retired FBI Special Agent, I recall carrying the 1076 for a few years in the early 90s. The Bureau eventually had me return it and issued me a Sig P228. A few years ago I picked up one at a local pawn shop. my Model 1076, serial number is TFK5996. I sent a request to S&W for an official letter and got a very long and interesting history of my pistol being shipped from S&W to the Minnesota State Center for Criminal Justice for 4 days, then Quantico/FBI (1990-1992) for a couple of years and then being shipped back to S&W, reconditioned and shipped the the Virginia State Police (1992-1994) and finally being shipped back to S&W -finally ending up being sold to a wholesaler in Florida...Anyone else ever seen an FBI service pistol be reissued to another agency?

What a great career and great gun too, I have the same 1076 but mines not an FBI issue. That alone adds a couple hundred bucks to the value. Gotta' love the FBI hump-back grips. I bought mine 2nd hand in a LGS with 2 mags, no box but in immaculate condition for $550 last year, which, as you know, is a steal. Do you mind if I ask what you had to give for yours? I don't think he is saying he got his original pistol back. I think he just got one of the FBI 1076's. In any case, they are good property. I had a chance to buy several at $300 each back in the early '90's. I should have bought a truckload instead of just one!
Yes good point- I did not get my original Bureau 10mm pistol back, unfortunately that was not an option. My first 10mm was taken up (all were recalled for a problem I believe) and a few weeks and I got one which had gone through the S&W custom shop-I wish I could have purchased either weapon. I found this one at a local pawn shop (traded a mint Beretta 92FS and $100 for it) and just got lucky that it had seen Bureau and VSP service earlier. I did buy a couple of the 10mms for $300 but gave them to my brother in law and father in law. Thanks for all the great feedback.
The value of an FBI authenticated 1076 is a matter of discussion but some have sold in the $2000-$2200 range so yes, it adds a couple of hundred dollars plus another $1000 or so. I haven't watched any sell in the last couple of years so maybe they have softened in price.

Just contact S&W and it's like $100+ or something to that effect. Never needed one, just seen em' done before by other members.

Holy buckets! I didn't realize they had gotten to that point at once, but yeah, it's softened a bit now, but still north of $1000+ and up for FBI'ers

I did the unthinkable to my 1066. I left my 1076 bone stock and did a little cosmetic, complete wolf springs, trigger job and buff and polish on all internals on my 1066 since it'll be an heirloom to my sons anyway. The 1076 trigger is stock, very nice, but then you pick up the customized 1066 and the trigger pull is the same long take-up, but it's about 1.5-2lbs lighter, and soooooo slippery smooth and has the glassiest crisp release. I am so not sorry for doing this "abomination" to such a collectable gun because, hey, I shoot all my guns!

The 1076 was the favorite S&W for me. I have had about 9 in all including two lettered FBI and one Performance Center assembled. Now, I only have one. It is a FBI contract model originally issued to another LE agency. The only significant difference I see in the 1076 commercial vs the FBI is the magazine disconnect. And speaking of magazines, look at this one. Yes, the count is 11.

I never could find one of the 15 rounders when they were put up for sale. I never saw an 11 rounder for sale until this one. Now that I actually have one or two, I like them better than the 15 rounder. They do not stick out as far and are easier to do a magazine change and to carry as an extra one.
