I admit it, I'm a flashlight junkie. Seems I'm out after dark a good bit both on the job and around the homestead and I've always liked having a quality light and I don't mind dropping some bucks for a good one if I need to. Due to the compact size of modern lights I always have 2, 3, or 4 lights on me when I'm on uniformed patrol; one mounted on my handgun, one on my duty belt, a mini light in my shirt pocket, and another one in my cargo pocket.

I've long since retired my old D-cell MagLight and Streamlight Stinger that served me so well on patrol for many years. I've eagerly made the change to LED technology and have been pleased with the fast pace that technology has improved with LED lights.

My most recent favorite light was a FENIX MC11 that I purchased only a month or so ago off a tip from this forum (got the 30% discount too!). This one puts out a lot of light for such a compact size and it's become my primary flashlight at home.

But my new current favorite is kind of an oddball that I've recently come across, a Streamlight Sidewinder. They're not really new on the market, they've been out a few years, but I ran across one recently for the first time and had to have one. It slides up under the epaulet on my uniform shirt and the swivel head allows me to adjust it as needed. It's great when I'm standing next to a driver's window and need to keep my hands free or while I'm getting the signature for a citation. Just this week I was directing traffic around an accident at night and I turned it on BLUE strobe to be more visible so as to help keep motorist from running over me.

I ended up buying two of these and they've been handier than a stick so far.

Hi, my name is hardcase60 and I'm a flashlight junkie!

I think there are three in the POV, one in the go bag and at least one in every room in the house. My six C-cell Streamlight retired when I did, but it rests beside the front door.

I too bought my first Fenix from the same link that you referred to. Now I got to go out and find a Streamlight Sidewinder. Thanks Faulkner.....

I ask the same question on nearly every flashlight thread for the last couple years.
Have yet to receive an answer so I'll try again.
How do the LED's work in dust / fog / smoke?
I've found the long wavelength (blue) refracts badly and renders the
light pretty much useless for anything further away than my feet.
I know there is something out there that works but before I spend the
bucks I'm looking for real world experience. Meanwhile, my Surefire
G2 incandescent serves me well.

If you gave up your old D-cell maglight.....What do you use to "wop" bad guys with?

Way cool....and thanks again for our member that posted the discount code. I picked up 3 Fenix lights. Great deals for a really good light.

Maglight brought out a high output LED conversion kit for the 4 D-cell light some years back. I converted my 2 units and they are still in the game.

I buy the $1.00 LED's at WalMart. Must have at least a dozen. I can't replace the batteries for a buck. :-)

Have a blessed day,

Leon

Yeah, I've seen those, but even with the conversion the Maglight still a heavy and bulky flashlight that performs no better than lights that are a fraction of their size.

OK, I admit it - I am a Dinosaur still having at least 8 or 9 (OLD) Maglites around the house in various sizes. I actually bought an LED version Maglite but gave it to my Son because I did NOT like the very harsh light it gave off. Yes it was much brighter but I just didn't like the intensity for most usages. I KNOW I am probably in the minority on that point, but I hate Fluorescent lighting as well. The ONLY place in my home I have it is in my Workshop and I do have regular incandescent fixtures directly over my work area, loading press, drill press, bench grinder, wire wheel and buffing machine. In my Shop Apron is a Doctors style pen light flashlight with the old push button switch on top - uses 2 AAA batteries - also makes a great bore light.
