Dang little ground squirrels burrowing in my yard. I got better than a dozen of these holes. It's just a matter of time until Coondog breaks her leg in one. I talked to pest control guys. They say they can use poisons and traps and all that... but I don't want our hawks to eat a poisoned one or the neighbors cat or Coondog for that matter... and the traps seem like too much of a hassle... so....

I gots my brain spinning around on this one and have come up with a true hold my beer and watch this project. Went to Ace Hardware and got foam gap filler. Going to run the motorcycle engine with a garden hose in the exhaust pipe and the other end in one of the holes (they are supposed to tunnel and join a larger food storage and nesting area under ground.) Let it run for a bit, then plug up all the other holes and let it run a while more.... then plug up the last hole. Reckon it will kill em?

A buddy in Calif. has a sweet setup................

A unit that carries a oxygen and acetylene bottle and a
long hose. He fills the far end with gas and plugs that hole....
then a middle hole with it then plugged.......
then goes to the final hole , with all others plugged and adds more gas and this time, Oxygen to the tunnel.

After two minutes he tosses a waded up peace of newspaper that is
on fire at the hole !!

He has it down to a science.
Also keeping body parts away from the hole.

You might want to start out on the light side for your first go round.:eek:

Full photo documentation of set up, execution and aftermath requested!

Oh yeah... motorcycle in the yard with a garden house hanging out the exhaust, other side stuffed into the ground. Beer in one hand and gun in the other shooting rounds into ground squirrel holes... dog barking... wife hollering. YouTube stardom here I come! :D

Just post a link soon as you are done. I'll be sure to watch it

I once had a rat problem around my dogs kennel. I took a lawn mower put a little oil in the gas pulled off the muffler and piped it into the hole . When I saw smoke coming out of a hole I just plugged the hole with dirt . I could hear the rats screeching but it stopped afer a few minutes never had rat trouble again in the last 20 years.

We had a problem with rats several years ago. Seems that they do "desert sinking ships". Detroit's population has gone down for decades, and the rats abandon areas with no food sources. They had only burrowed behind our garage, since we keep garbage tightly sealed, just because of the threat.

The city came out, put several gas bombs in the holes, and we plugged the holes with rocks of the appropriate size. Haven't seen one since.

My Plan A, was to sit near the holes, and plug the critters with head shots from my Crosman 1377 pistol when they came out after some bait. Wife unit nixed this idea, and said that I would have to repaint the garage if I put any dings in the clap boards. :( :(
