Tittle was old school and tough as nails. He played at a time when the players played for the love of the game as much or more than for the $$....I remember that pic of him from when I was a kid.
When I was in high school, I enjoyed watching him play for the 49ers. He was one quarter of the answer to one of the NFL's great trivia questions: "Who played in the 49ers' Alphabet Backfield?"
Answer:
Y. A. Tittle, quarterback.
C. R. Roberts, halfback.
J. D. Smith, fullback.
R. C. Owens, flanker.
I haven't watched football in 40 some years (and given the current situation, probably never will again). But I had to open this thread when I saw a name I actually recognized.
Anybody remember when the Lions had Night Train Lane?
Didn't the lions have a 4 L defensive back field, YALE LARRY, DICK LEBEAU, NIGHT TRAIN LANE AND I don't remember the first name but last name was Lowe ??

Before I retired, I used to pass his insurance company on the way home. I never met Y.A. Tittle, but I met Billy Wilson many times. In order to make ends meet, Wilson worked for a sporting goods store on South First Street in San Jose. The players during that time played for the love of the game. Not to get rich. The players were tough, but they also weren't thugs.
Once upon a time ... old school ball was every weekend. Just can't find much about the game now to generate the same interest. Like baseball before steriods and multiple multiple-choice pitchers. Tittle was before my time. The photo though ... impressive. JMHO. Sincerely. bruce.
Y.A. was a big part of my youth growing up in NYC and being glued to the TV to watch games every Sunday. He was a part of some iconic teams back in the day.
Dang! What memories!! Y.A. Tittle, John Brodie...I remember watching them play the L.A. Rams who had Norm Van Brocklin, Billy Wade, Del Shofner, Paul "Tank Younger, and Elroy "Crazy Legs" Hirsch.
In my opinion, those were the great days of football. May he rest in peace.
