My UUUUGLY Model 28-2-Update on Post #57

... Bottom line, I walked out of the store with the gun for a total price of $433.00, y'all are free to express your opinions on whether or not I got skinned. :)

Provided the action is in the condition you describe - & the cylinders & bore are OK, I wouldn't say you got skinned. Not too bad, anyway.

That said, bluing wear is one thing, but corrosion is something else again entirely. If not stopped, it will continue to get worse.

Personally, I look into killing the rust chemically (ospho), polishing the remaining pitting out - as much as possible, & having a nice matte blue done.

Oh yeah, smooth combat trigger fitted while you are at it.

If you do some of the work yourself, you could probably save some $$. Find a gun smith that will work w/ you.

You'd end up w/ a great "working" grade N frame - that you would never want to turn loose of!

I am going to say that its a good looking ugly. Maybe a pretty nice ugly.

For that money, I'd say you is a lucky ****** ******* !!!! :D

BTW, I haven't read the whole thread, so apologies if this has been already mentioned, but you can safely, and effectively, go after that rust with some oil and extra-fine 0000 steel wool.

That will be done in the very near future. :)

Dave,

Whatever you do is up to you. After all it is your gun to do with as you decide. Ugly gun.......no, not ugly........well & hard used.....yes. Still full of lots of use and will be around when all of us are long gone. Enjoy the gun and have fun.

AJ

It looks like a good buy to me. I will make a great holster gun / woods gun. Truck gun too if you don't just toss it under the seat and forget about it. Most trucks have consoles or door compartments etc. where you can keep it away from moisture and salt. Probably a bad idea to leave it in the truck overnight anyways, so you could wipe it down / clean it every so often when you bring it in.

If you are happy with it being ugly, that's all that matter's!
This is mine.
Pre model 28

My nephew has a cocking indicator Model 41,,,
he left it under the seat of his pickup for 3 years,,,

The Model 41 makes the OP's gun look like a custom Performance Center recent delivery!! :D

He keeps the Model 41 in his gun cabinet,, to remind himself to never do THAT again!!

I'd clean it up a bit, load it, and drop it in a holster.

I think there's something to be said for a gun you don't mind carrying and shooting. If a gun is too nice, I feel like I have to garage it, but if it's got some miles on it, I'll just keep on truckin'.

I would NOT call it UUUUGLY, I would simply call it slightly challenged in regards to finish. Ten or fifteen minutes with some bronze wool followed by an application of some Birchwood Casey Super Blue and a good waxing will have that model 28 looking rather presentable.

BTW, I have a Dan Wesson 15-2 purchased for 400 bucks out the door at Cabelas and after doing the above it takes someone looking pretty closely under good lighting to spot the areas that needed touching up. And, that was with the high polish bluing that the Monford DW's were shipped with, with the slightly matted finish of your model 28 you would really have to look close to spot the areas you touch up.
