Florida passes gun control measures

Personally, there are very few 19 and 20 year olds I'd want to see with a gun. People seem much slower to mature nowadays than they did a few decades ago.

Then dont require them to register for the draft at 18 or allow them to volunteer for the military until they are 21.

Register for the draft? They still do that? Where have I been? I think the military is a great place for some of these young people. Maybe it will get some of them headed in the right direction.

Yes, men 18-25 still have to register for the draft. Women DO NOT have to register for the draft.

The military may be great for some young people, but that doesn't mean that people who don't go into the military shouldn't have 2A rights.

Between 2013 and 2015, an average of two school shootings took place at K-12 schools each month. Among shootings at K-12 schools in which the age of the shooter was known, 56 percent (39 of 70) were perpetrated by minors.

I have seen a good number of people over 21 who should not have firearms. Most young adults are responsible, so as gun owners are we to punish those responsible for the actions of a very few? So will you be so accommodating when YOUR gun rights are taken because of the few criminals?

I am 63, my wife is 61, so I guess all gun rights should be restricted to anyone under 60. Sound fair?

If you're getting your numbers from one of the gun control groups, be aware that they use a very, very, broad definition of "school shooting". If the shooting was anywhere within 1,000 feet of a school, no matter what time of day, they count it.

Also, there is a lot of gang activity in and around shootings.

I responded to calls where the shooters were as young as 14, as were the victims.

If you want to kill someone from another gang and they go to school, where would the best place be find them?

You may also want to check on the weapons used. I expect you'll find handguns were about 99% of them.

You may want to check the sources you use for statements.

I am old enough to remember when court judges depending on the circumstances would offer offending youths an option of going to jail for a certain period of time or joining the military and continuing the case for 2 weeks to give the offender a chance to think on it and come to a decision.......

guess with all the social positions (left, right, conservative, liberal) those options are not allowed now.......shame.......

We had a lot of guys in the Army in the late 1960's who were put there by a judge. They spent most of their time repainting our buildings. I know a kid had to have a pretty influential family to get a break like that. Don't think the Army will take them in like that any more. Too bad.

I am told by people in a position to know that the military does not want them. Since the draft ended, the military has tried to increase the professionalism of all ranks and no longer wants to be a reform school for wayward yutes.

There are still young men who go into the military and get their lives straightened out, but that is not something that judges make them do.

Even the French Foreign Legion won't take criminals any more and hasn't for about 30 years.

And the bill is now law. Gov. Rick Scott signed the bill today. :(

Is there anyone here, especially our Florida members, who were holding out hope that Rick Scott would not sign it?

As I was growing up I had my first .22 rifle at 9 years old in Missouri. Most of my friends did as well. We passed summer vacations hunting and fishing and target practicing in the woods. By the time I went into the USMC I was already proficient with a rifle, also having 4 years in the ROTC. It is unfortunate that so many young men will not have the experience and character they may need in the future. As I look back I can see that men like Audie Murphy had similar experience that served him and our nation well when it was needed.

And that chain needs to be broken to outlaw firearms. This will not stop with just firearms, there will be attempts to limit air rifles, they want to keep the youth away from shooting sports.
