Bye-bye, Jaguar XJ

Yep, I dumped my Jag at Carmax last week. I'd been without the car for 5 months after the engine quit last year. When the warranty company finally got an engine that worked, I had no faith in the thing any more. This was borne out shortly after I got it back and a catalytic converter went South. Thank goodness for the federal eight year/80,000 mile warranty requirement.

I have no clue about a replacement. There isn't much that has such a combination of exterior styling and classy interior. I've sat in a few things and they just seem blah by comparison or have some glaring "no sale" issue.

I've owned 3 Jaguars over the years and I swore after I got rid of each one it would be the last. Hopefully this is now true as they have to be the epitome of unreliability. I had high hopes that after they were acquired by Ford the reliability would improve but that doesn't appear to be the case. It's too bad because Jaguar has built some of the most attractive autos over the years and the E Type to me is still in a styling class all by itself!

Good to know.
Had to sell my Audi A8 last summer (various reasons).
I miss it a lot.

XJ is a replacement I've been looking at for a while.
Going to have to keep my eyes open fo problems...

Maybe an Alfa Romeo or a Maserati? Beautiful cars, and despite their reputation can they be any more troublesome than the Jag?

Too bad about the Jag, it is seemed like the complete package - looks comfort, performance.

Well, there some things from and in the UK that don't work too well, which I guess is why you're now American. ??

But the tea is still good, from both Twining's and from Taylor's of Harrogate. And Scots whisky remains good.


I second the suggestion in another post, about getting a Toyota. I've had good luck with them.

Get a Lexus. I have two, and they simply don't break. The interiors are very nice, too. Unfortunately, IMHO, the front end design of the current models is as ugly as a mud fence. However, the previous generation of the LS model was very attractive, and it had a smooth and powerful V-8. Maybe you could find a well maintained late model. Of course, the Mercedes-Benz S-Class always looks good, but I'm not sure they're any more reliable than your Jaguar.

The Alfa Guilia suffers a "no sale" fault, no spare. Many cars suffer the same problem. My "no-go" list as I remember it.

The Lexus GS350 I sat in recently was nicely put together, but didn't stir me.

Plain Toyotas and Hondas are a no go. I own a Nissan truck for that itch.

So far every new gym car needed the engine pulled out. My last gm a $27k suburban the block cracked at 52k miles the 60k drive train warranty covered it then at 127k miles the rust started. Since the service department laughed when I told them it sounded like a can of marbles in the morning when it started up cold.

Well who laughs last laughs best. I only own Subaru's now.

Don't sell Jaguar out just yet. They seem to be on a comeback.
The Ford thing was a mess.
I took a chance on the F-Pace last year when they came out. I am so happy with the fit, finish and overall quality so far anyway. Plus it is light, fast and goes thru the snow like crazy.
They seem to invested into development and are backing it up with a stout warranty. Always been a brand I want to like, so I am hopeful.

That is indeed a good looking car. Trim. Understated styling. That's classy and I like it.

The only things that it needs are an airfoil, headers, a surfer foot gas pedal and a lot of STP stickers all over it....... Oh, and some big tires.

I have a friend who was a Jaguar mechanic. He said that being bought by Ford was the best thing that ever happened to them. Ford actually put real engineering into the car. Alas, they still have issues.

He also said, "Jaguar put so much effort into making a fine automobile, they forgot to make a good car."

He drives a Toyota.


Two years ago I bought a Mini Cooper S (made by BMW). Hands down the most fun car I've ever owned; when it works. It's also the most expensive and difficult car to repair I've ever seen. If I could afford to just take it to the mechanic and plunk down $1K every time something went wrong, I'd drive this car until it fell apart. Alas, I'm not made out of money. Because I have over 100K on the clock, I can't sell it. So, I'll keep driving it. It is fun to drive and gets great gas mileage for as quick as it is.

Get with it, dude! Whatcha need is a '62 Dodge Lancer with a slant-six and three-on-the-tree. Ya can't kill 'em with a big stick and can fix anything on 'em with a Leatherman and a roll of duct tape. They would survive an EMP blast, too!

Yeah, the no spare and run flats seems to be standard equipment nowadays. But even when they did have spared they were just a donut, sometimes not even inflated.

I put normal tires on my Vette last summer, I carry a compressor and a can of fix-a-flat for emergencies. Hopefully I won't need them. In over 20 years, despite 2punctures, the spare has never been on my Tahoe.
