I just bought a beautiful 442 as my summer companion and decided it needed some speed loaders to pair with it. I bought the Safariland comp1 that's supposedly for the j frames and it doesn't line up with the cylinder all too well. Any thoughts anyone, I would really like to stay with the Safariland speed loaders due to that's that I'm used to using but if hks is the route to go I suppose stepping out of your comfort zone isn't too bad.

If you still have the original S&W grips on it (the rubber ones that come with the new revolvers) it isn't the loader it is the grips.

They are not cut for speed loader use.

You might shop around and see if you can find a pair of the old Uncle Mikes grips to fit your 442. They are cut for speed loaders and are patterned after Craig Spegal grips.

Also, if you're handy, you can carefully trim away the factory rubber grip until your speedloaders clear it.

+1 The Uncle Mikes work with both Safariland and HKS, the originals with neither. Actually the HKS can be made to work with the stock stocks, but I wouldn't want to count on getting it right under pressure and that's when you NEED speedloaders, right?

Pachmayr compac pro will allow your speedloaders to work and are a dream for ccw and shooting.

Sometimes the type of bullet, i.e., semi-wadcutter, wadcutter, or a bullet with a sharp shoulder, inhibits the ability to quickly and smoothly utilize the speed-loader. I have found that cartridges with round bullets without a shoulder insert better, i.e. jacketed hollow point.

Also, instead of inserting the speed-loader "straight" into the cylinder, you may wish to try "rocking" it in. This is best accomplished by approaching at an angle, lining up two chambers and then "rocking" the speed-loader into parallel with the cylinder.

I find that speed strips carry better because they're flat. Kevin

I agree absolutely. You can get a pack of two Bianchi speed strips for less than $10 with free shipping on eBay. It's easy to load two shells at a time from the strip -- not quite as fast, but there you go.

I may pick up some speed strips. Would you recommend them for range use too? No sense in having a handgun for carry and not train the way you'll use it.

Arthritis has robbed my hands of most of their dexterity. Though I have Safariland speed loaders, I decided the best solution for me was the New York Reload - a 2nd, loaded revolver that I'd use rather than try reloading either manually, or speed loader or even speed strip. Part of my EDC includes a fully loaded 8 round speed strip just because I'm from the school of thought that a gun without ammo isn't much of a gun. Before relying on the New York Reload, I found loading from a speed strip was easier and more sure for me than using a speed loader.

Good luck,

Dave

what I like about the Safariland offerings is the lack of need for manual dexterity to deploy. in your case its skeletal structural but in many cases its adrenalin based that steals away the fine motor skills needed for other brands. of course the ny reload is always a good option for those willing to carry two guns.
