Seems most quality engraving did look similar to Nimscke's at that time. Likely because most engravers came from the same area of Europe, and all worked close to each other in the NE USA.
The question for me not that is really matters (I like the engraving); is this a factory engraved gun or what I have come to understand a New York engravers work?
It could be either. I think the majority of the engraved Model 1's were shipped from the factory as plain guns, and the engraving was commissioned by Smith & Wesson's New York sales agent, Joseph W. Storrs.
That said, the factory did occasionally ship a "fancy" gun. A factory letter would tell you whether or not that was the case with this gun.
