TOMORROW IS GROUNDHOG DAY

Don't forget, tomorrow, February 2, is Groundhog Day. In Punxsutawney, PA, the Inner Circle of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club will make its annual trek, done every year since 1887, to Gobbler's Knob to commune with the Seer of Seers, Punxsutawney Phil, to determine if Phil sees his shadow and predicts how long winter will last.

Phil is well taken care of. During the year he resides in a licensed mini-zoo in the town municipal center. And he does have companionship there. Since he's the major tourist attraction for the town, the Groundhog Club makes sure Phil is given all the comforts he needs.

My hunting camp is a couple miles from phils house. I saw him just last year while running some errands in town.

If anything I felt kinda bad for him being cooped up inside on a beautiful sunny summer day. At least he has company.

I saw Bill Murray at the Groundhog Day ceremony in 1992. The movie was still in production and Murray stayed hidden until the ceremony was almost over so he wouldn't disrupt anything. The Inner Circle put a top hat on him and then he got to hold Phil.

The story is that Bill Murray was so impressed from being at the Groundhog Day ceremony that he went back to Illinois and did a re-write on the movie script. The production company did strive for authenticity, and there is evidence of their intent. In the scene where Phil's prediction is announced, in the movie it was word for word identical to Phil's proclamation at the 1992 ceremony. In the scene where he is driving the red Cadillac with the two drunks and it crashes into a big groundhog statue in a vacant corner lot, it reflects the actual vacant corner lot with a groundhog statue that existed at the time.

I attended the Groundhog Day ceremony from 1989 until 2009. Punxsutawney, PA is my ancestral home and I spent a lot of time there while I was growing up. In 1992 I received an appointment as an Ambassador of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club.

That picture was from the Groundhog Club picnic last September. This is the gathering where we give Phil his summer elixir. The legend is every swallow of the elixir gives Phil 7 more years of life.
