LGS has a 637-2 DJN62XX for 350. I have an XD Tactical with 3 mags, 14 rounders. It's a nice gun but it's huge and I need a carry gun more than I need a big gun.

The 637 seems like it's relatively unscathed. I see some leading or junk in the barrel, but nothing crazy. Just a bit dirty. I was all smart and bought some feeler gauges and measured the cylinder cap at .006. I can't discern any endshake but I forgot to test it with the hammer back or trigger pulled. Just while at rest.

It did show some movement in the extractor rod when I had a piece of lined paper underneath it and I rotated it. But my guess is, that was there from the factory because I can't see any signs of abuse on this gun.

The plate screws seem untouched. And the trigger is waaaaaay nice. I'm not even gonna bring my measuring tool because it's light years better than my 442's was.

Guy at the counter will trade me even steven not even tax or transfer fees. Which I figure is good. I'm a little skeptical cuz he seems rather excited and I'm wondering if there is something wrong with this gun. I wonder if I should ask to shoot it first. Or maybe I should ask the history of it. Where it came from, etc. Probably not a bad idea.

Anybody know the date of this one? I don't have a book.....

What say you all to the trade?

The screws show obvious signs of disassembly... it's always a concern of mine when the previous owner doesn't have the proper tools or ability to disassemble without damaging the screw heads. Also makes me wonder what they did internally.

Based on the condition and my own experiences, I'd pass/say that you can do better.

It'll take more effort and time/patience but I'd suggest selling your XD and adding a bit more to get a new one or at least one in a bit better/unmolested condition.

I guess I missed that in my haste. Might be why the trigger is so nice. Although strange thing is that they have a brand new one that has as nice of a trigger. Which I found odd. Actually they have a brand new 642 also that has a super nice trigger. I was kind of blown away because I was thinking they'd be heavier for new guns.

He wouldn't give me a trade in price on the new ones though.....

He's probably having trouble selling the 637 which would explain his willingness to make a deal.

I don't mean to dash your enthusiasm, I get the same way when I see something shiny :)... just pointing out what I see/giving you something to think about.

I have a 637-2, bought new two years ago. The DA trigger is very nice out of the box, SA took some breaking in, but good now after 200+ rounds of whitebox ammo. Shoots well. For $350, I'd buy it, screw scratches and all. Speculation, but the owner may have disassembled for an extreme cleaning, or curiosity. I'm a curious type, have disassembled every gun I ever owned, during cleaning, going back 40 years.

:) And a few my friends asked me to clean/fix.

I've got a 637-2. It was given to me by a friend who passed away. I carry it occasionally, (did today), mostly it rides in my truck. It's also seen duty as a BUG. I admit that it was my first revolver, so I'm kinda of sentimental about 637's.

I would do the trade and not look back. They make great light weight carry guns. I usually pocket carry mine in a Mika. I bobbed the hammer spur just for that reason. It disappears in the pocket of a pair of cargo shorts or pants. Congratulations if you acquire it!

YOUR CHOICE.

I had a 637 & the finish DID NOT WEAR WELL & I had no use for a hammer on an air weight snub. It may as well have been DAO, FOR ME. I'm happy now with a 640 & I like the enclosed hammer that keep out dust/lint/sand. I prefer a little wt to MY guns so I'm good with all steel. The 642 should merit some thought. My 2 cents. :)

I'm a revolver guy and would not make that trade. You'd be better off selling the XD to an individual and buying what you want. I'd recommend a short barreled K-frame (2, 2.5, 2.75, or 3 inch) as a carry gun. Until recently my EDC has been a 4 inch P&R Model 65-1 square butt .357 Magnum. It's not hard to conceal.

Give up a 15 round semi, to carry a revolver of six shots with almost zero possibility of a reload in a close quarters fight?

If the XD 45 is too big, get a M&P 9 or 40.

Point of reference large lgs recently had 642 and 637 on sale, I believe $325, might have been 349, nib, "Smith and Wesson Days" I don't know if that was made up or if SW was running a promotion.

I'd think 2X about buying/trading for something used that can easily be purchased new for very little more $. IMO, $350 is a lot for a used gun commonly available new. Sounds like the LGS can't move it, no surprise at that $. And he has new Js in stock...

That is cheap. But not surprising. I've never seen them at that price. Where is this at?

Yeah, that's a fair point. I'm going to visit another LGS on Friday I think because they have new ones for 439 and maybe they'll good me a good trade in value on the XD. I just think when they do trade ins on new guns, they're not going to give you what they're worth.

Flipside is that I don't think XD's are bring a whole lot of money. It's a pretty decent gun and has never given me problems. It's just HUGE. And I'd rather have more guns I can carry. Especially revolvers.

Sell yours privately and purchase a new one. That is not that good a deal for a used one that you know nothing about.

I'd never trade my XD45. It is dead reliable, relatively cheap to shoot, hits where I point it, and didn't cost much. It rides in my truck when traveling. I also have an XD40 that was gifted to me and have run 500 rounds in a day through it without a single hiccup. And I like J frames, but prefer my 638 over a 637.

Say..just for perspective in this quandry of yours , would you share pics of your XD and mags???

Let me see what I have currently and I can take better pics tomorrow in the light. If I have time. Lots to do tomorrow....

pretty sure this was the last time I shot it, about a year and a half ago.....:

I've got nothing against the XD. It does shoot well and it's been reliable. It's just huge and I'm in the need of carry revolver. Yes, I have one hopefully coming back from smith but in the meantime I feel lost without it and once I do get it back, it's probably good to have a back up in case that ever happens again.
