Hot weather driving stupidity. LONG rant

Working Security at a large Chemical Plant, I come in contact with many over the road truckers (18 wheelers) most of which are English as a 4th language and have trouble understanding verbal instruction never mind Road Signs at 70 mph. Had 2 last week alone show up only to find out they were supposed to be at the sister company 3 states away.. They punched in the Parent Company name and headed for the first thing the GPS came up with..

LVSteve,

You could use one of these.

I don't even rant anymore about stupid drivers just a normal day for me . Stupid in a semi did a u turn in front of me today almost causing a pile up. Old guy pulled out left lane slammed on the brakes causing a co driver to run off into the median. I keep extra aspirin and BP meds in my cooler, I take them in the afternoon before I blow up

Poor drivers are not limited to any one particular type of vehicle.

So a tractor trailer is on a tight schedule and needs to arrive at its destination on time 5-600 miles away. Just a few miles per hour can make a huge difference in time.

How long does it take you to get back up to speed in a regular vehicle?? It could take a large truck with a full load several miles on the smallest inclines.

I marvel that people are soo inconsiderate these days they can't use the little lever on the left side of their steering column to show a little courtesy of letting everyone else know their next move and in what direction.

And how about the idiots that set their cruise control to the speed limit and travel in the left lane??

In Utah its against the law to "travel" in the left lane.

I still believe that state safety inspections are a good thing.

When was the last time you had your ball joints checked?

Texas has good roads. We have nice, wide shoulders. We even have a "drive friendly" campaign. That means you can move over, onto the nice, smooth wide shoulder and let the traffic go by. Lots of Texas tagged cars do just this. Most out of state drivers seem to be scared to pull over and let the car behind them pass, and collect a long line behind them.
Just move over, okay.
The 55 mph hall monitors are dangerous.

Texas also has some with little to NO shoulder especially county roads.

Seems too many out of staters are tagged now as Texas and still cant grasp the pull right concept.

Especially annoying on a nice 2 lane both direction road with a 60-65 or 70 limit and they pace one another and neither will speed up or slow down enough to move over or let others around them.

To me I dont really care if you
Lead
Or Follow
But please get out of the way.

And no need to slow to a darn crawl to make a right in to the drive or what ever.

Its a freaking Camry not a dam Australian road train turn it wont flip I promise.

What I get from these discussions is the folks complaining about left lane camper is they think the left lane is all theirs and no one should impinge.
Some people are too liberal to drive in the right lane, my brother is one so inflicted. He cusses those in the left lane for going too slow and cusses the guy behind him for flashing his hi-beams to get brother Al out of the way.

Me I stay to the right, that lane usually runs faster.

Speaking of one who has been on both sides of this situation, maybe
some should walk (drive) and few miles in their shoes.
I hauled hot asphalt in the mid seventies for a couple years. This was
when the wt. limit was 73,280lbs. A 69 mdl International with a 8V71
Detroit coupled with a 16 speed two stick transmission. I love the old
2 stroke Detroit engines they just don't have much lugging power. You
have to keep them wound tight and keep shifting gears. BTW you can
not stop these on a dime, going highway speeds on the multiple lane
highways and trying to keep a safe stopping distance between you and
the next vehicle in front and some lane changing four wheeler must cut
between you, and having to brake and gear down can get on your nerves. These people seem never to realize if they caused me to
wreck all of us become French fries in 300+ degree oil.
Another thing the four wheelers will see you coming on a two lane road
and pull out in front of you then drive about 25 mph. Again brake and
down shift, or what is worse, a farm tractor or grain combine taking up
both lanes, I have followed several of these at 15mph for what seemed
like 20 miles, more like 2 or 3.
All this being said unless Steve has some big important need to go fast,
just slow down and live and let live. Also some poor guy trying to make
a living with a turn signal out and you call the police, to me that sounds
a little CS.

I didn't call the law on him for the blinker. I called the law on him for driving at a clearly unsafe speed on a flat freeway in a vehicle that sounded like it was about to expire in the lane any second. 30 mph with the hazards going means that you have a problem and are getting off at the closest exit. This clown clogged the traffic for at least two exits and was passing a third when I last saw him. That's why I raised the BS flag on him.

I wondered why people drive the speed limit in the passing lane. I believe I have figured it out. Driving in the slow-right lane you often come up on people going slower than the speed limit so you have to pay more attention and have to brake which shuts off their cruise. They then have to wait for traffic in fast lane to go by so they can then pass the slowpoke.
In the passing-fast lane they don't have to do that because there isn't usually anyone in front of them doing less than the speed limit. They become what they avoided in the slow lane. They make everyone else drive around them. Talk about self centered lazy ignorant people.
One night coming home from work traffic in both lanes for some reason slowed down below speed limit. There were two morons in pickups driving side by side holding up traffic. I guess they had fun enjoying their control of everyone behind them.
Texas recently made a law that the left lane is for passing not driving slow in. I don't know if it gets enforced but they sure could write dozens of tickets in no time at all.
Well call me a driver with an attitude. I got onto the shoulder pavement. I passed both the jerks leaving them behind me now. I should have slowed down breaking up their blockade but I didn't. I sure wish a state trooper had been in their blockade.

Some friends from out of state stopped by for a visit as they were passing through. They said what they noticed was cars in Texas evidently don't come standard with turn signals. That and drivers in Texas have got to be the worst for driving with their bright lights on and evidently don't know how to shut them off when someone is coming toward them. Just lazy inconsiderate drivers.
I have to say back in the 80's I was driving in Boston and I said I would never complain about driving in Houston again. What a rat race driving in Boston was.

The keep right except to pass rule is a general rule found in the Model Traffic Code and as far as I know, the law in every state. It is often ignored.

I can recall parts of I-40 in Arkansas where there wee signs asking trucks to use the left lane to equalize road wear; I don't think I ever saw that anywhere else.

I-55 in Arkansas south of the Missouri border. The right lane is so rough if you drive in it the car will get shaken to pieces.

Mind you the left lane is pretty rough too  but slightly smother to drive in.

I've driven in Texas and I'm the first to admit that I don't know how you all do things. On two lane roads, you all stop to let people folks make left turns(!) - that's unheard of in NM! And for funeral processions, BOTH sides pull over and stop as it passes by. Again, unheard of! You all even pull over for emergency vehicles!

In Texas, I've been pulled over for having my tire on the solid line on the shoulder - New Mexico plates - and those stops have been roadside interrogations and separation of my passengers about me on where I'm going, why I'm going and where I'm coming from and who I'm with. Passengers, too. No tickets, but I'm not risking a 45 minute stop to save a few seconds.

My rant about truckers (some, truckers, not all) in city limits, specifically ABQ, is that they run red lights especially right and left turns. Some times they honk, most times they just run the light taking up two three lanes as they make the turn. If they cut me off, I honk, If they respond with a bird, I respond in kind with a call to their company.

We have the same issue out here on I-15 and I-40. Parts of I-40 in the spring look like testing grounds for runway denial munitions.

Crossing the border from Illinois to Indiana is like entering a 3rd world country. Rough roads full debris, junk, car parts, and especially tractor trailer tire treads. Abandoned vehicles seem to be scattered all along I-65 toward Indianapolis.

When driving around Chicago on I-294, if you see a car weaving in and out of lanes trying to go 5 mph faster than everyone else and in general behaving like a jack wagon, more often than not the car has Indiana plates.

The Chicago natives seem to know how to drive responsibly and get along with each other. Even though the traffic is very heavy, it moves very quickly.

Local funerals here typically have a sheriff car in the lead and one at the back of the procession. Not only do both sides of traffic stop, folks will doff their hat as the hearse goes by.

Here in Florida, we've been quoted either 1000 per DAY or 19,000 per month moving in, mostly from the NE and Upper Midwest as those folks retire and are tired of snow, taxes and politics. Many either didin't drive much in bog cities or drove like maniacs. Amazing how many will just cut across 4 lanes from R2L to get to a turn lane without a signal. It is really bad Ocala south to Miami.
