On my way home from a 4 day visit to Dallas, TX, US of A, and what a terrific visit it was. Dallas nailed it!

(CCW info is in my thread in the 'Concealed Carry' section.)

Soooooo...lotsa cool bars and great food. With the exception of Frankie's on Main Street. Simply horrible service and uninterested beertenders; friends and I walked out after sitting at the half empty bar for more that 10 minutes watching one beertender sort receipts and the other stack glasses. Not even an acknowledgement we were there.

That experience was balanced, though, by the service, beer, and style of the dive bar across the street...oePenguin. Boom! What a cool joint. And has a covered balcony where one can smoke cigars! :D

Adair's is another dive bar in Deep Ellum (1 mile walk) that was a great experience. The Twilite Lounge was jam packed on a Saturday afternoon that found me hoisting PBR's and smoking cigars! There was a murder in the parking lot between those bars on Friday night but that did not deter us.

Dallas digs drinking...even the IHOP at the airport has a full bar.

The 6th Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza is a MUST. Very interesting, informative, and wonderful experience. Truly. Tour is self guided and it tells things I never knew. Personal note: The entire site is much smaller than I envisioned. The locations of the shots are marked with X's on the roadway. IMHO, it was not a difficult shot.

The Pioneer Cemetery downtown was cool. Many old graves marked with historical tablets. Some interesting stories were lived in the olden days.

Major downside: The proliferation of electric scooters is a real problem and now understand why some cities ban them. Riders just abandon them when (presumably) the juice runs out. They literally lay everywhere. In the street, on sidewalks, in entrances, everywhere. They are owned by Line S, Uber, Lyft, and Bird. Each of those companies should be ashamed. They need to manage the problem. Also, folks ride them just about everywhere...on the sidewalks and on the streets. They are faster than you think and witnessed more than a few near collisions with pedestrians.

The homeless population is an issue. Many were quite aggressive and trying to intimidate. No bueno.

All said, you are waaaaay cool, Dallas. We shall return!

Be safe.

Well, we do have an exceptional zoo, a couple of fine aquariums, etc. besides low grade bars downtown.

Even have some real restaurants. And they also serve alcoholic drinks.
Like many cities, the downtown region is not the best.

Exactly what I thought when I first visited the site many years ago.

FWIW, from my reading, the concept with the electric scooters is to ride one to where you are going, leave it when you arrive, and then when you want another ride locate another, different available scooter nearby using GPS technology and your smartphone app. With improved battery capacity, they keep going for quite a while. As I understand it, the scooter services pay people to go around retrieving them at night and taking them to a recharging station.

To me, they look fun, if dangerous. At 67, I won't be trying one anytime soon, and I can see how they could cause problems if used without prudence and courtesy.

I was amazed at the compactness of the area where the assassination happened. I told folks after I saw it that I know a dozen or more 12 year old kids who could make that shot with an open sight 94 Winchester.

If you think it's worth the effort you should see if Frankie's has a website. You can let the owner know about your experience there. Sometimes the owner or manager has no clue about the way customers are treated until they let them know.
